High resolution 1-20 micron imaging of the nuclear environment of NGC 1068

We present new mid-infrared continuum and near-IR line images of the nuclear environment of the nearby (14 Mpc) Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The 8, 10, and 19 micron data were measured with our new mid-IR array camera, MIRACLE, at UKIRT in Nov. 1991 while our images of the H2 2.121 micron and (Fe 2) 1.64 micron lines were obtained with FAST, the MPE imaging spectrometer, at the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope in Aug. 1991. The MIRACLE data were imaged through narrow band (lambda/delta(lambda) greater than or equal to 50) filters whereas FAST incorporates a Fabry-Perot etalon (lambda/delta(lambda) greater than or equal to 950).

Infrared spectroscopy of SN 1987A from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The near-infrared (1.5-3.0 microns) spectrum of SN 1987A was recorded on UT 16.3 April 1987 from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The dominant spectral features included multicomponent P-alpha emission at 1.9 micron and a sharp edge in the continuum at 2.7 microns. The interpretation of these features relates to physical conditions in the supernova atmosphere and to the role of dust around supernovae.

Near infrared spectroscopy of SN 1987A using the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

An IR spectrum (1.5-3.0 microns) of SN 1987A was obtained on UT April 16.3, 1987 with the University of Arizona Fourier-transform spectrometer on the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The dominant spectral features were a double-peaked P-alpha emission line and a sharp absorption edge in the continuum at 2.7 microns, both of which would have been obscured by strong telluric H2O absorptions at ground-based observatories. These IR features relate to models of the SN shell and to the role of dust in SN.

Search for methane in Comet Halley

A search for gaseous neutral CH4 was conducted in the coma of comet Halley on March 20, 1986 using a Fourier transform spectrometer on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. In the field-of-view (24,000 km) the CH4 rotational temperature is equal to the kinetic temperature of the coma molecules due to collisions in most of the region and is frozen in at the outer edge. The spectrum of the nu3 band is due to fluorescence with the R(3) to R(5) lines being most suitable for Earth-based observations. Measured upper (3 delta) limits of 4 times 10 to the minus 19th power W/sqcm for these lines lead to a (7 delta) upper limit of 4 times 10 to the 28th power CH4 molecules per second. This value corresponds to 4% of the water vapor production rate at the time of observation.

Determination of the C-12/C-13 and O-16/O-18 ratio in the Martian atmosphere by 10 micron heterodyne spectroscopy

The planetary atmosphere of Mars was studied during the opposition of May, 1984, by means of a 10-micron heterodyne receiver mounted at the Cassegrain focus of a 3-m telescope. On the basis of a model of the Martian atmosphere, the isotopic ratios derived from the fully resolved absorption spectra obtained were compared with the results of Viking probe in situ measurements and terrestrial values; agreement is obtained within statistical errors. It is shown that highly resolving spectroscopy allows for the determination of isotopic ratios in remote sensing with a precision that is comparable to that of in situ mass spectroscopy.
