Experimental Study for Validation of Resilient Response of Controls - Thrust 2 Controls Assessment

The focus of this project is to design, execute, and analyze experiments around resilience response. As part of the Resilience through Data-Driven, Intelligently Designed Control (RD2C) initiative, this project builds upon the previously designed control algorithms and experiments. It designs detailed uses cases to test RD2C-developed mitigation schemes in specific realistic scenarios, analyze and save the measurement data sets. Having a high-confidence and consistent data set is crucial for identifying relevant metrics to describe the system resilience in specific real-life-like scenarios of power grid operation.

DSO+T: Integrated System Simulation (DSO+T Study: Volume 2)

This report summarizes an integrated co-simulation model used by the Distribution System Operator with Transactive (DSO+T) study to represent an electrical generation, delivery, and end-load systems for the purposes of assessing the viability and value proposition of transactive energy coordination of flexible assets versus a business-as-usual case. The integrated co-simulation model includes the bulk generation and transmission system, including the day-ahead and real-time scheduling and dispatch of thermal generators. Forty distribution system operators were modelled in detail, including tens of thousands of residential and commercial buildings and their flexible end-loads. These included HVAC systems, residential water heaters, electric vehicles, and stationary, behind-the-meter, batteries. Both wholesale market and end-load results for the business-as-usual case are presented and compared to actual ERCOT system data to assess the accuracy and representativeness of the resulting model.

Protection of Distribution Circuits with High Penetration of Solar PV: Distance, Learning, and Estimation-Based Methods

The results of DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office project 34233 are presented. The newest version of IEEE Standard 1547 enables photovoltaic inverters to ride through voltage disturbances, improving bulk system reliability, at the expense of removing undervoltage trip as a fast method of de facto fault detection in high PV adoption scenarios. The project explored new methods of fault detection that don't rely on communication systems and could be available quickly, including distance-based schemes, focused directional relays, and two different data-driven schemes. The schemes were evaluated with fast-phasor simulation, electromagnetic transient simulation, and field data collection at partner utilities Chattanooga Electric Power Board and Dominion Energy Virginia. Accomplishments and possible paths forward are summarized.
