Four-dimensional phase-space reconstruction of flat and magnetized beams using neural networks and differentiable simulations

Beams with cross-plane coupling or extreme asymmetries between the two transverse phase spaces are often encountered in particle accelerators. Flat beams with large transverse-emittance ratios are critical for future linear colliders. Similarly, magnetized beams with significant cross-plane coupling are expected to enhance the performance of electron cooling in hadron beams. Preparing these beams requires precise control and characterization of the four-dimensional transverse phase space. In this study, we employ generative phase-space reconstruction techniques to rapidly characterize magnetized and flat-beam phase-space distributions using a conventional quadrupole-scan method. The reconstruction technique is experimentally demonstrated on an electron beam produced at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator and successfully benchmarked against conventional diagnostics techniques. Specifically, we show that predicted beam parameters from the reconstructed phase-space distributions (e.g., as magnetization and flat-beam emittances) are in excellent agreement with those measured from the conventional diagnostic methods. Breakdown insensitive acceleration regime in a metamaterial accelerating structure

A new regime in radiofrequency (rf) breakdown, named the breakdown insensitive acceleration regime (BIAR), was observed in an 11.7 GHz metamaterial structure for wakefield acceleration driven by rf pulses with a duration of a few nanoseconds. In the BIAR, rf breakdown occurs without interrupting potential beam acceleration, resulting in greater resilience to breakdown. We have investigated the possibility that BIAR can support higher gradients by characterizing the breakdown in a high-power test. The peak gradient reached 190 MV / m when the structure was powered by 6 ns long rf pulses with 115 MW peak power. The short rf pulses were extracted from 65 MeV electron bunch trains with a total charge of up to 210 nC. This work has revealed the benefits of short-pulse acceleration by characterizing rf breakdown in the previously unexplored parameter space. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Opportunities for Bright Beam Generation at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA)

Bright electron beams have played a critical role in many recent advances in accelerator technology. Producing bright beams via photo-emission is ultimately limited by the mean transverse energy (MTE), which is determined by the photocathode. This paper discusses the opportunity to generate bright electron beams using an upgraded version of the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) photo-injector. The focus of this study is to examine the optimal configurations of the AWA photo-injector to produce 100 pC with a ∼100 nm transverse emittance (corresponding to a 5D brightness B5≥1015 A·m−2). The numerical optimization of the AWA photo-injector operating point, including realistic electromagnetic field maps, is presented for the different types of photocathodes under consideration.
