Search for η c ( 2 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) and improved measurement of χ c J → 2 ( π + π − )

We search for the hadronic decay η c ( 2 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) in the ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) radiative decay using ( 27.12 ± 0.14 ) × 10 8 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is found, and the upper limit of B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) ] B [ η c ( 2 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) ] is determined to be 1.43 × 10 − 6 at the 90% confidence level. Using ψ ( 3686 ) → γ χ c J transitions, we also measure the branching fractions of B [ χ c J ( J = 0 , 1 , 2 ) → 2 ( π + π − ) ] , which are B [ χ c 0 → 2 ( π + π − ) ] = ( 2.127 ± 0.002 ( stat ) ± 0.101 ( syst ) ) % , B [ χ c 1 → 2 ( π + π − ) ] = ( 0.685 ± 0.001 ( stat ) ± 0.031 ( syst ) ) % , and B [ χ c 2 → 2 ( π + π − ) ] = ( 1.153 ± 0.001 ( stat ) ± 0.063 ( syst ) ) % . Extracting the femtometer structure of strange baryons using the vacuum polarization effect

Abstract One of the fundamental goals of particle physics is to gain a microscopic understanding of the strong interaction. Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons are still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into hyperon-antihyperon pairs provide a powerful tool to investigate their inner structure. We present a method useful for hyperon-antihyperon pairs of different types which exploits the cross section enhancement due to the effect of vacuum polarization at theJ/ψresonance. Using the 10 billionJ/ψevents collected with the BESIII detector, this allows a precise determination of the hyperon structure function. The result is essentially a precise snapshot of the$$\bar{\Lambda }{\Sigma }^{0}\,(\Lambda {\bar{\Sigma }}^{0})$$ Λ ¯ Σ 0 ( Λ Σ ¯ 0 ) transition process, encoded in the transition form factor ratio and phase. Their values are measured to beR = 0.860 ± 0.029(stat.) ± 0.015(syst.),$$\Delta {\Phi }_{\bar{\Lambda }{\Sigma }^{0}}=(1.011\pm 0.094({{\rm{stat.}}})\pm 0.010({{\rm{syst.}}}))\,{{\rm{r}}}ad$$ Δ Φ Λ ¯ Σ 0 = ( 1.011 ± 0.094 ( stat. ) ± 0.010 ( syst. ) ) r a d and$$\Delta {\Phi }_{\Lambda {\bar{\Sigma }}^{0}}=(2.128\pm 0.094({{\rm{stat.}}})\pm 0.010({{\rm{syst.}}}))\,{{\rm{r}}}ad$$ Δ Φ Λ Σ ¯ 0 = ( 2.128 ± 0.094 ( stat. ) ± 0.010 ( syst. ) ) r a d . Furthermore, charge-parity (CP) breaking is investigated in this reaction and found to be consistent with CP symmetry.

Improved measurement of the semileptonic decay D s + → K 0 e + ν e

Analyzing e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb − 1 collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fraction of the semileptonic decay D s + → K 0 e + ν e to be ( 2.98 ± 0.2 3 stat ± 0.1 2 syst ) × 10 − 3 . Based on fit to the partial decay rates in various q 2 intervals, the product value of D s + → K 0 hadronic form factor and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa element is measured to be f + K 0 ( 0 ) | V c d | = 0.143 ± 0.01 1 stat ± 0.00 3 syst . With | V c d | = 0.22486 ± 0.00067 as an input, the hadronic form factor is evaluated to be f + K 0 ( 0 ) = 0.636 ± 0.04 9 stat ± 0.01 3 syst . The branching fraction and form factor measurements are factors of 1.6 and 1.7 more precise than the previous world averages, respectively. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the branching fraction of ψ ( 2 S ) → γ π 0

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.1 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 2 S ) events, 7.9 fb − 1 ψ ( 3773 ) data, and 0.8 fb − 1 off-resonance data samples collected with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fraction of ψ ( 2 S ) → γ π 0 and e + e − → γ π 0 form factor at momentum transfers Q 2 ∼ 13 GeV 2 . The e + e − → γ π 0 cross section is fitted with considering the interference between the ψ ( 2 S ) and continuum amplitudes and two solutions are found, B = 3.74 × 10 − 7 with ϕ = 3.93 rad and B = 7.87 × 10 − 7 with ϕ = 2.08 rad . Here, B is the branching fraction of ψ ( 2 S ) → γ π 0 and ϕ is the relative phase angle between the ψ ( 2 S ) and continuum amplitudes. Due to insufficient off-resonance data, the branching fraction B ( ψ ( 2 S ) → γ π 0 ) is determined to be in the range [ 2.7 , 9.7 ] × 10 − 7 within 1 standard deviation of the contour region. Measurement of the background in the CMS muon detector in ${p}{p}$-collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

The CMS detector, including its muon system, has been operating at the CERN LHC in increasingly challenging conditions for about 15 years. The muon detector was designed to provide excellent triggering and track reconstruction for muons produced in proton–proton collisons at an instantaneous luminosity ($\mathcal{L}$) of 1 x 10 34 cm –2 s –1 . During the Run 2 data-taking period (2015–2018), the LHC achieved an instantaneous luminosity of twice its design value, resulting in larger background rates and making the efficient detection of muons more difficult. While some backgrounds result from natural radioactivity, cosmic rays, and interactions of the circulating protons with residual gas in the beam pipe, the dominant source of background hits in the muon system arises from proton–proton interactions themselves. Charged hadrons leaving the calorimeters produce energy deposits in the muon chambers. In addition, high-energy particles interacting in the hadron calorimeter and forward shielding elements generate thermal neutrons, which leak out of the calorimeter and shielding structures, filling the CMS cavern. We describe the method used to measure the background rates in the various muon subsystems. These rates, in conjunction with simulations, can be used to estimate the expected backgrounds in the High-Luminosity LHC. This machine will run for at least 10 years starting in 2029 reaching an instantaneous luminosity of $\mathcal{L}$ = 5 x 10 34 cm –2 s –1 and increasing ultimately to $\mathcal{L}$ = 7.5 x 10 34 cm –2 s –1 . These background estimates have been a key ingredient for the planning and design of the muon detector upgrade.

Measurement of the e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 cross section at s = 2.1000 − 3.0800 GeV

The process e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 is studied at 20 center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.1000 to 3.0800 GeV using 636.8 pb − 1 of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross sections for e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 are measured with high precision. Since the lowest center-of-mass energy, 2.1000 GeV, is less than 90 MeV above the p p ¯ π 0 energy threshold, we can probe the threshold behavior for this reaction. However, no anomalous threshold enhancement is found in the cross sections for e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for Rare Decays of D s + to Final States π + e + e − , ρ + e + e − , π + π 0 e + e − , K + π 0 e + e − , and K S 0 π + e + e −

Using 7.33 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies in the range of s = 4.128 – 4.226 GeV , we search for the rare decays D s + → h + ( h 0 ) e + e − , where h represents a kaon or pion. By requiring the e + e − invariant mass to be consistent with a ϕ ( 1020 ) , 0.98 < M ( e + e − ) < 1.04 GeV / c 2 , the decay D s + → π + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − is observed with a statistical significance of 7.8 σ , and evidence for the decay D s + → ρ + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − is found for the first time with a statistical significance of 4.4 σ . The decay branching fractions are measured to be B ( D s + → π + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − ) = ( 1.1 7 − 0.21 + 0.23 ± 0.03 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( D s + → ρ + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − ) = ( 2.4 4 − 0.62 + 0.67 ± 0.16 ) × 10 − 5 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No significant signals for the three four-body decays of D s + → π + π 0 e + e − , D s + → K + π 0 e + e − , and D s + → K S 0 π + e + e − are observed. For D s + → π + π 0 e + e − , the ϕ mass region is vetoed to minimize the long-distance effects. The 90% confidence level upper limits set on the branching fractions of these decays are in the range of ( 7.0 – 8.1 ) × 10 − 5 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Strong and Weak C P Tests in Sequential Decays of Polarized Σ 0 Hyperons

The J / ψ , ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 processes and subsequent decays are studied using the world’s largest J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) data samples collected with the BESIII detector. The parity-violating decay parameters of the decays Σ 0 → Λ γ and Σ ¯ 0 → Λ ¯ γ , α Σ 0 = − 0.0017 ± 0.0021 ± 0.0018 and α ¯ Σ 0 = 0.0021 ± 0.0020 ± 0.0022 , are measured for the first time. The strong C P symmetry is tested in the decays of the Σ 0 hyperons for the first time by measuring the asymmetry A C P Σ = α Σ 0 + α ¯ Σ 0 = ( 0.4 ± 2.9 ± 1.3 ) × 10 − 3 . The weak C P test is performed in the subsequent decays of their daughter particles Λ and Λ ¯ . Also for the first time, the transverse polarizations of the Σ 0 hyperons in J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) decays are observed with opposite directions, and the ratios between the S -wave and D -wave contributions of the J / ψ , ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 decays are obtained. These results are crucial to understand the decay dynamics of the charmonium states and the production mechanism of the Σ 0 − Σ ¯ 0 pairs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurements of charged-particle multiplicity dependence of higher-order net-proton cumulants in p + p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV from STAR at RHIC

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios C 4 /C 2 , C 5 /C 1 , and C 6 /C 2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios C 5 /C 1 and C 6 /C 2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in p+p collisions.

Observation of the antimatter hypernucleus $^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$

Matter-antimatter asymmetry is a research topic of fundamental interest, as it is the basis for the existence of the matter world, which survived annihilation with antimatter in the early Universe. High energy nuclear collisions create conditions similar to the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang, with comparable amounts of matter and antimatter. Much of the antimatter created escapes the rapidly expanding fireball without annihilation, making such collisions an effective experimental tool to create heavy antimatter nuclear objects and study their properties. In this paper, we report the first observation of the antimatter hypernucleus $^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$, composed of an $\bar{\Lambda}$, an antiproton and two antineutrons. The discovery was made through its two-body decay after production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In total, 15.6 candidate $^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$ antimatter hypernuclei are obtained with an estimated background count of 6.4. Lifetimes of the antihypernuclei $^3_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$ and $^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$ are measured and compared with lifetimes of their corresponding hypernuclei, testing the symmetry between matter and antimatter. Various production yield ratios among (anti)hypernuclei and (anti)nuclei are also measured and compared with theoretical model predictions, shedding light on their production mechanism.
