Interplanetary optical navigation - Voyager Uranus encounter

Optical observations were necessary during the Voyager II Uranus approach and encounter in order to meet mission navigational requirements. In this paper, the overall optical navigation system and operation at Uranus are outlined. The formulation of the optical observables are presented, as well as their subsequent integration into the overall orbit determination products. Optical data analysis and some resulting orbit determination results from Uranus are shown. Certain scientifically important results were natural outcomes of the optical data analysis, and these are also reviewed. Finally, certain optical navigation related problems are anticipated at the forthcoming Neptune encounter in 1989; these are briefly discussed as are plans to deal with them.

Shape of Io

An approach for measuring the triaxial shape of Io from Voyager images is described. Triaxial shape of a satellite is detrmined by comparing the theoretical shape and location of the body's limb and terminator curves with the actual curves observed in the two dimensional images. Limb or terminator points are found by matching a model for the limb profile with the actual appearance of the limb in the digital data. The theoretical model for the limb model depends on the viewing and illumination geometry, the satellite reflection characteristics and the camera 'point spread function'. The method is applied to imaging data taken of Io in the last 25 hours befor Voyager 1's closet approach to the satellite.

Interplanetary orbit determination

A general description of the Viking interplanetary orbit determination activity extending from launch to Mars encounter is given. The emphasis is on the technical fundamentals of the problem, basic strategies and data types used, quantitative results, and specific conclusions derived from the inflight experience. Special attention is given to the use of the spacecraft-based optical measurements and their first application as a principal navigational data type for an interplanetary mission. The optical-based orbit determination, in fact, was the primary contributor to the exceptional interplanetary navigation accuracy experienced by both Viking missions. The Viking application of optical orbit determination relied in large part on the technology developed and demonstrated by the Mariner 9 Optical Navigation Demonstration.

The determination of the interplanetary orbits of Vikings 1 and 2

A description is presented of the navigation-related events of the Viking Mars mission. Orbit determination system fundamentals are discussed, taking into account the trajectory models, observation models, radio data models, range considerations, optical data models, filter models, the orbit determination process, critical orbit determination inputs, and orbit determination errors. Attention is also given to questions of orbit determination strategy, orbit determination results, optical measurements processing, aspects of approach orbit determination evaluation, and the orbit determination software system.
