High speed laser-induced refractive index change in ophthalmic HEMA hydrogel using a line focus

Laser-induced refractive index change (LIRIC) techniques typically focus femtosecond laser pulses to a tight spot to achieve the high intensities required to alter ophthalmic materials. A line-focus implementation using 800 nm pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate has been shown to greatly increase the effective writing speed of the process, but the high pulse energies used led to nonlinear propagation effects, presenting challenges for the fabrication of ophthalmic correctors. By taking advantage of the lower effective order of multiphoton absorption for 514 nm pulses, power levels may be reduced, allowing overlapped pulse writing. We demonstrate that this allows high-quality phase bars and devices to be made at high speeds.
