Development of High Fidelity, Fuel-Like Thermal Simulators for Non-Nuclear Testing

Non-nuclear testing can be a valuable tool in development of a space nuclear power or propulsion system. In a non-nuclear test bed, electric heaters are used to simulate the heat from nuclear fuel. Work at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center seeks to develop high fidelity thermal simulators that not only match the static power profile that would be observed in an operating, fueled nuclear reactor, but to also match the dynamic fuel pin performance during feasible transients. Comparison between the fuel pins and thermal simulators is made at the fuel clad surface, which corresponds to the sheath surface in the thermal simulator. Static and dynamic fuel pin performance was determined using SINDA-FLUINT analysis, and the performance of conceptual thermal simulator designs was compared to the expected nuclear performance. Through a series of iterative analysis, a conceptual high fidelity design will be developed, followed by engineering design, fabrication, and testing to validate the overall design process. Although the resulting thermal simulator will be designed for a specific reactor concept, establishing this rigorous design process will assist in streamlining the thermal simulator development for other reactor concepts.

Few arc-minute and keV resolutions with the TIGRE Compton telescope

The tracking and imaging gamma ray experiment (TIGRE) Compton telescope concept can provide an angular resolution of a few arcmin, an energy resolution of a few keV and high sensitivity, while providing the wide field of view necessary for surveying and monitoring observations. Silicon and CdZnTe strip detectors are used to detect Compton pair events and determine their incident directions and energies. Above 400 keV, Compton recoil electrons are tracked through successive layers of thin silicon strip detectors. Compton scattered photons are detected with CdZnTe strip detectors. Pair electrons and positrons are tracked to provide high sensitivity observations in the 10 to 100 MeV range. Polarization studies are performed with large angle Compton scatter events. The TIGRE concept and development status are described.

Multipurpose Prepregging Machine

Machine designed and built for variety of uses involving coating or impregnating ("prepregging") fibers, tows, yarns, or webs or tapes made of such fibrous materials with thermoplastic or thermosetting resins. Prepreg materials produced used to make matrix/fiber composite materials. Comprises modules operated individually, sequentially, or simultaneously, depending on nature of specific prepreg material and prepregging technique used. Machine incorporates number of safety features.

A new NASA LaRC Multi-Purpose Prepregging Unit

A multi-purpose prepregging machine has been designed and built for NASA Langley Research Center. The machine has numerous advantages over existing units due to its various modular components. Each of these can be used individually or simultaneously depending on the required prepregging method. A reverse roll coater provides the ability to prepare thin films from typical hot-melt thermoset formulations. Also, if necessary, the design allows direct fiber impregnation within the reverse roll coater gap. Included in the impregnation module is a solution dip tank allowing the fabrication of thermoplastic prepregs from solution. The proceeding modules within the unit consist of four nip stations, two hot-plates, a hot-sled option and a high temperature oven. This paper describes the advantages of such a modular construction and discusses the various processing combinations available to the prepregger. A variety of high performance prepreg material systems were produced on IM7 (Hercules) carbon fiber. These included LaRC RP46, a PMR-type resin processed from methanol and two polyamide acids, LaRC IA and LaRC ITPI, prpregged from N-methyl pyrrolidinone (NMP). Parameters involved in the production of these prepreg materials are presented as are the mechanical properties of the resulting good quality laminates. A brief introduction into the existing prepregging science is presented. Topics relating to solution prepregging are identified with a focus on the current research effort and its future development.

Energetics of the protonation of CO - Implications for the observation of HOC(+) in dense interstellar clouds

A number of molecular species on the H3CO(+) energy hypersurface is examined. Ab initio molecular orbital theory is used to determine the structures and relative energetics of the two isomers of HCO(+) and HOC(+) together with the affinity of CO for protonation at either end. The proton affinities of H2 and H2CO are also examined. The calculations are performed using large basis sets and include the effects of electron correlation. The calculated vibrational frequencies are used to correct for zero point energy differences. The results show that the proton affinities of H2 and CO to form HOC(+) are within 1 kcal of each other. The calculations demonstrate that there is no thermodynamic driving force to form HOC(+) in collisions of H3(+) with CO, and that the formation of HCO(+) in such collisions is very exoergic. A plausible mechanism is suggested to explain the differences observed between the laboratory and the interstellar medium.
