Autonomous spacecraft design methodology

A methodology for autonomous spacecraft design blends autonomy requirements with traditional mission requirements and assesses the impact of autonomy upon the total system resources available to support fault-tolerance and automation. A baseline functional design can be examined for autonomy implementation impacts, and the costs, risk, and benefits of various options can be assessed. The result of the process is a baseline design that includes autonomous control functions.

The Shuttle environment from a payload viewpoint

The paper describes the basis for current estimates of Shuttle environments. It considers available predictions of environments, uncertainties, worst-case conditions and discusses how this data base is used to derive the environmental design requirements. These requirements are assessed from a payload viewpoint, i.e., how they affect payload type, design, mission, location in Shuttle and payload classification. Finally, typical future Shuttle payloads (a pallet-mounted instrument and a spacecraft) are discussed relative to how the Shuttle environments influenced the payload design and test approach.

Evaluation of radiation interference in the Voyager Sun Sensor's cadmium sulfide detector

The simulation of radiation interference effects and the results of a radiation interference test on two Voyager Sun Sensor prototype detector assemblies are reported. The derivation of test levels and requirements are discussed and show that cobalt 60 gamma radiation is an effective and practical simulator of the ionization dose rate effects induced by high-energy electron flux incident on the spacecraft at a rate of 3.7 x 10 to the 8th e/sq cm-sec (10 rad(Si)/s) during closest approach to Jupiter. The test results provide information that is used to confirm an analytic correlation, and to predict satisfactory performance of a spacecraft sun sensing device having stringent angular resolution requirements. The measured detector response shows that at dose rates incident on the detector elements of 2 rad(Si)/sec, which is four times that expected during Jupiter encounter, the radiation-induced angle error is almost an order of magnitude less than that allowed by the acceptance criteria.

Jupiters radiation belts and their effects on spacecraft

The effects of electron and proton radiation on spacecraft which will operate in the trapped radiation belts of the planet Jupiter are described, and the techniques and results of the testing and simulation used in the radiation effects program are discussed. Available data from the Pioneer 10 encounter of Jupiter are compared with pre-encounter models of the Jupiter radiation belts. The implications that the measured Jovian radiation belts have for future missions are considered.
