Adaptive finite element methods for high-speed compressible flows

An adaptive finite element algorithm for solving the unsteady Euler equations is described. The finite element algorithm is based on a Taylor/Galerkin formulation and uses a very fast and efficient data structure to refine and unrefine the grid in order to optimize the approximation. A general version of the method which can be applied to moving grids with sliding interfaces is given, and results for a transient supersonic calculation of rotor-stator interaction are presented.

An adaptive finite element strategy for complex flow problems

Adaptive finite element methods for steady and unsteady flow problems in two-dimensional domains are described. Details of a data management scheme are given that provide for the rapid implementation of various CFD algorithms on changing unstructured meshes. The results of several numerical experiments on subsonic and supersonic flow problems are discussed.

Adaptive finite element methods for compressible flow problems

Some recent work on adaptive FEMs for solving transient Euler equations in two-dimensional domains is summarized. The formulation of an FEM model of the Euler equations is shown, and the application of the adaptive strategies to data management schemes is addressed. Sample numerical results from the application of the model and strategies to the flow over a step and to transient cases are given.

Recent advances in error estimation and adaptive improvement of finite element calculations

Recent advances in adaptive finite elements are summarized. General concepts behind a posteriori error estimation, h-method data management, and algorithms for fluid-mechanics applications are then examined, and some results of numerical experiments with new adaptive codes are given. Numerical examples include supersonic flow over a 20-deg ramp, supersonic flow in expansion corners, the reflecting-shock problem, and the rotating-cone problem. Finally, future directions of research in the field are outlined.
