Measuring Flux Density Of Monatomic Oxygen

Improved version of catalytic-probe technique yields more accurate measurements of flux density of neutral, monatomic oxygen. Two probes measure heat of recombination on catalytic surface. Principal application of technique in experiments in which oxygen plasmas used to examine degradation of various materials by monatomic oxygen.

Method for determination of neutral atomic oxygen flux

A method for measuring atomic oxygen flux to a probe surface is presented which uses two probes. One is a glass probe enclosing a small ceramic resistor heater and a thermocouple for determining the ambient local temperature. Another probe has a silver tip and a thermocouple inside it. In an atomic oxygen environment, the silver probe will quickly develop a silver oxide coating which provides for atomic oxygen recombination. The use of the two probes allows a more accurate determination of the energy input into the catalytic silver oxide probe due to recombination.

Chemseal 3808-A2 penetration into small leak path

A possible fix to a leak in the oxidizer system of the Space Shuttle Discovery's attitude control system was proposed by MSFC. This fix involved the passing of a shuttlecock past the leaking Dynaflow fitting and sealing the vent tube containing the fitting with Chemseal 3808-A2. The question of whether the Chemseal 3808-A2 can flow into the leak path and provide a better seal was addressed analytically and by experiment to verify the analytical formula used. The results show that the equations are applicable and that the Chemseal will flow into the expected leak path and seal.

Liquid-Crystal Thermal-Control Panels

Radiative temperature regulators have no moving parts. Conceptual temperature-regulating system proposed for spacecraft useful in automatic or remotely controlled regulation of solar heating in buildings, provided cost reduced sufficiently. System consists of liquid-crystal panels made to absorb or reflect sunlight.

Reducing Sodium Contamination in MOS Devices

Method of removing positive ions from oxides in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) transistors and intergrated circuits ensure freedom from contamination by sodium and other mobile positive ions. Electric field applied during oxide growth to push mobile Na + ions to surface. After cooling from growth temperature, field turned off and Na + contaminated surface layer etched away. New method intended to suplement established methods of minimizing ion contamination, such as scrupulous cleanliness in processing, purging with hydrogen chloride to react with and remove contaminants, and growing extra-thick gate oxide, then etching it to remove large portion of contaminants concentrated near surface.

Orbital atomic oxygen effects on thermal control and optical materials - STS-8 results

The effects of exposing 23 specimens of optical and thermal control materials to space at 120 km altitude for over 40 hrs during the STS-8 mission are discussed. Ten samples of paint targeted for the Space Telescope (ST) and the Tethered Satellite were exposed, and included polyurethane, oxide, silicone, and glossy black and white samples which were scanned for alterations in the optical properties after being retrieved. Nine mirror-type materials were also investigated, along with silver specimens typical of solar cell interconnects. The oxygen flow at the orbital altitude was 3.5 x 10 to the 20th atoms/cu cm. The exposures caused no degradation of the magnesium fluoride mirror coatings, while the Kapton coating for the ST solar cell panels showed evidence of losing thickness. The Ag solar cell contacts will require coatings to extend their lifetimes. Overcoatings were also proven necessary for inhibiting degradation of painted surfaces.
