X2000 advanced avionics characterization study : Living in the modern world of difficult to predict processor performance

The characterization study has shown that adjustments in an application's data accesses can easily create a performance difference of three or more times in actual applications. In general, by iterating over a small portion of a data set rather than its entirety, execution can remain within cache thereby producing a performance increase. Additionally, the approaches used in performing I/O can make a major performance difference.

Space Shuttle status and performance improvements

Following nearly a decade of studies and development, the Space Shuttle is beginning its flight test phase. This paper reviews the status of the program, and preparations of the space vehicle and facilities for flight. The launch preparations, including conduct of the Mission Verification Test, which comprises a Flight Readiness Firing prior to the actual launch, is discussed. This simulation was designed to test the readiness of the complete organization and all ground and flight equipment for commitment to the first manned orbital flight. The plan of the orbital flight program is outlined indicating how each succeeding flight is made more complex and severe to incrementally test the Space Shuttle. Completion of this four flight program readies the Space Shuttle for operations in late 1982. Payload performance to orbit is increased as the program progresses through the development flights and on into operations.

Systems engineering challenges of the Space Shuttle

Problems encountered during the Space Shuttle's development that were due to the unique configuration of the vehicle are discussed. While conventional rocket space vehicles have been symmetric, greatly simplifying the analysis and integration of constituent elements, the Space Shuttle's combination of a winged orbiter with side-mounted solid rocket boosters and a large propellant tank presented a more complex system for the analysis and testing of ascent flight control, propulsion system, aerothermodynamics and structural dynamics. Attention is given first and second stage flight operations, return-to-launch-site, abort-once-around and abort-to-orbit mission modes, propulsion system and propulsion test development, and the aerothermodynamics of the external propellant tank and Orbiter.

The Space Shuttle - Orbital flight phase begins

The results of the first orbital flight test of the Space Shuttle are summarized and the future operations are discussed. It is mentioned that increased payload lift capability will be obtained through a series of planned steps which have already been initiated in the program. These include the use of the main engines at higher thrust levels, lower weight External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB's), higher thrust SRB's, and removal of certain test equipment from the Orbiter. The economics of the Space Shuttle to the users and the future uses of the Space Shuttle are also discussed.
