A novel experimental system for the KDK measurement of the 40 K decay scheme relevant for rare event searches

Potassium-40 ( 40 K) is a long-lived, naturally occurring radioactive isotope. The decay products are prominent backgrounds for many rare event searches, including those involving NaI-based scintillators. 40 K also plays a role in geochronological dating techniques. The branching ratio of the electron capture directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been measured, which can cause difficulty in interpretingcertain results or can lead to lack of precision depending on the field and analysis technique. Additionally, the KDK (Potassium (K) Decay (DK)) collaboration is measuring this decay. A composite method has a silicon drift detector with an enriched, thermally deposited 40 K source inside the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer. This setup has been characterized in terms of energy calibration, gamma tagging efficiency, live time and false negatives and positives. A complementary, homogeneous, method is also discussed; it employs a KSr 2 I 5 :Eu scintillator as source and detector.

First coupled GENE–XGC microturbulence simulations

Covering the core and the edge region of a tokamak, respectively, the two gyrokinetic turbulence codes Gyrokinetic Electromagnetic Numerical Experiment (GENE) and X-point Gyrokinetic Code (XGC) have been successfully coupled by exchanging three-dimensional charge density data needed to solve the gyrokinetic Poisson equation over the entire spatial domain. Certain challenges for the coupling procedure arise from the fact that the two codes employ completely different numerical methods. This includes, in particular, the necessity to introduce mapping procedures for the transfer of data between the unstructured triangular mesh of XGC and the logically rectangular grid (in a combination of real and Fourier space) used by GENE. Constraints on the coupling scheme are also imposed by the use of different time integrators. First, coupled simulations are presented. We have considered collisionless ion temperature gradient turbulence, in both circular and fully shaped plasmas. Coupled simulations successfully reproduce both GENE and XGC reference results, confirming the validity of the code coupling approach toward a whole device model. Here, many lessons learned in the present context, in particular, the need for a coupling procedure as flexible as possible, should be valuable to our and other efforts to couple different kinds of codes in pursuit of a more comprehensive description of complex real-world systems and will drive our further developments of a whole device model for fusion plasmas.

Multiscale Modeling of Total Ionizing Dose Effects in Commercial-off-the-Shelf Parts in Bipolar Technologies

A multiscale modeling platform that supports the “virtual” qualification of commercial-off-the-shelf parts is presented. The multiscale approach is divided into two modules. The first module generates information related to the bipolar junction transistor gain degradation that is a function of fabrication process, operational, and environmental inputs. The second uses this information as inputs for radiation-enabled circuit simulations. The prototype platform described in this paper estimates the total ionizing dose and dose rate responses of linear bipolar integrated circuits for different families of components. The simulation and experimental results show good correlation and suggest this platform to be a complementary tool within the radiation-hardness assurance flow. Finally, the platform may reduce some of the costly reliance on testing for all systems.

LHC Forward Physics

The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the BFKL dynamics, multiparton interactions, and saturation. The report ends with an overview of the forward detectors at LHC. Each chapter is correlated with a comprehensive bibliography, attempting to provide to the interested reader with a wide opportunity for further studies.

Testing and application of a viscous passive damper for use in precision truss structures

A passive damping device intended to replace individual struts in precision truss structures for space applications is described. The theory of operation of the D-Strut device is detailed, and simple five- and three-parameter models are derived. Results from tests conducted to characterize the D-Strut at submicron displacement levels are reporeted. The incorporation of a strut in a precision truss testbed is described. Parameters determined from the component-level tests are used in a finite element model of the truss, and damping augmentation is predicted. Using the simple three-parameter model, a damper is selected for multiple placement in a separate optical interferometer truss testbed. The effect of the addition of the damper struts is illustrated analytically in a model of the structure. Finally, an improved Arched Flexure D-Strut that is expected to provide higher loss factors, and is currently under development, is described.

Exploratory wind-tunnel investigation of the stability and control characteristics of advanced general aviation configurations

Results of low-speed wind-tunnel investigations are presented for two general aviation configurations: the AVTEK canard configuration and the DeVore conventional configuration. Cooperative research programs were undertaken by industry and NASA to jointly conduct tests in the NASA Langley 12-Foot Low-Speed Wind Tunnel to explore stability and control characteristics of each configuration. A 1/5-scale AVTEK model and a 1/6-scale DeVore model were tested over an angle-of-attack range of up to 45 deg and an angle-of-sideslip range of up to 20 deg. Results from the AVTEK test are presented with an emphasis on the effects of configuration on the stall and poststall characteristics. Results from the DeVore test are presented with emphasis on the effects of wing leading-edge droop design on spin resistance characteristics.

Testing of Candidate Batteries for Global Positioning System

Three lithium batteries proposed as candidates for use in the Global Positioning System are studied. The batteries are discharged at several rates and temperatures both before and after environmental testing. Batteries are heated inside a closed chamber until they vent. Samples of the vented gases are analyzed for components which might be toxic. The test results raise concerns about each of the proposed batteries.

Actuator participation in a bending mode identification system

A hydraulic actuator designed for a thrust vector control system used as a shaker for a vehicle to determine the bending mode frequencies is described. The actuator is used as the prime mover and the frequency sensor for the flexible vehicle in a test tower. Advantages in using the actuator piston position with respect to a commanded position to obtain the bending mode frequencies are shown.
