DMSK Receiver For Mobile/Satellite Service

Receiver for 2.4-kbit/s differential minimum-shift keying (DMSK) and Gaussian minimum-shift keying(GMSK) suitable for communication between land-mobile stations via geostationary satellites. Operating on phase-shifted signal in 800-MHz band, in presence of fading and Doppler frequency shifts, receiver compact, makes efficient use of frequency spectrum, and wastes little power. Receiver design implemented in very-large-scale-integrated circuits. Basic DMSK receiver design relies on baseband rather than intermediate-frequency processing of in-phase and quadrature signal components because phase errors due to differential delays smaller at baseband.

Automatic Frequency Control For DMSK Receiver

Report discusses performance of automatic frequency-control (AFC) subsystem of differential minimum-shift-keying receiver described in "DMSK Receiver for Moblile/Satellite Service," NPO-16659. Describes efforts to quantify behavior of system during acquisition of carrier signal; including theoretical analysis leading to numerical simulation, and measurements of performance of receiving equipment.

A multipurpose digital modulator

The theoretical basis and hardware implementation of a versatile device which uses digital signal-processing methods to achieve signal modulation are reported. The carrier-modulation process is formulated as a simple quadrature equation; a generalized description of the signal constellation to be processed is derived; the pulse-shaping scheme is explained; and the system architecture is described in detail and illustrated with diagrams. Experimental results obtained with a breadboard transmitter based on this modulation technique are presented in extensive graphs. The power spectra and eye diagrams generated for different QPSK, 8PSK, and MSK modulation schemes are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions. It is suggested that this modulator could be readily implemented in VLSI and mass produced.

Proceedings of the Twelfth NASA Propagation Experimenters Meeting (NAPEX 12)

The NASA Propagation Experimenters Meeting was convened on June 9 and 10, 1988. Pilot Field Experiments propagation studies, mobile communication systems, signal fading, communication satellites rain gauge network measurements, atmospheric attenuation studies, optical communication through the atmosphere, and digital beacon receivers were among the topics discussed.

Antimultipath communication by injecting tone into null in signal spectrum

A transmitter for digital radio communication creates a null by balanced encoding of data modulated on an RF carrier, and inserts a calibration tone within the null. This is accomplished by having the calibration tone coincide in phase and frequency with the transmitted radio frequency output, for coherent demodulation of data at the receiver where the tone calibration signal is extracted and used for multipath fading compensation.

Simulation of AFC for a DMSK Receiver

Low bit rates suitable for low-cost satellite communications. LOOP computer program written to simulate automatic frequency control (AFC) subsystem of differential minimum-shift keying (DMSK) receiver with bit rate of 2,400 baud. AFC simulated by LOOP is first-order loop configuration with first-order resistance-and-capacitance filter. Written in MS SuperSoft FORTRAN 77.

Channel simulation to facilitate mobile-satellite communications research

The mobile-satellite-service channel simulator, which is a facility for an end-to-end hardware simulation of mobile satellite communications links is discussed. Propagation effects, Doppler, interference, band limiting, satellite nonlinearity, and thermal noise have been incorporated into the simulator. The propagation environment in which the simulator needs to operate and the architecture of the simulator are described. The simulator is composed of: a mobile/fixed transmitter, interference transmitters, a propagation path simulator, a spacecraft, and a fixed/mobile receiver. Data from application experiments conducted with the channel simulator are presented; the noise converison technique to evaluate interference effects, the error floor phenomenon of digital multipath fading links, and the fade margin associated with a noncoherent receiver are examined. Diagrams of the simulator are provided.
