Effects of Nose Angle and Mach Number on Transition on Cones at Supersonic Speeds

An investigation has been made to determine the transition characteristics of a group of smooth, sharp-nosed cones varying from 10 degrees to sixty degrees in included apex angle over a Mach number range from 1.61 to 2.20 and a range of Reynolds number per foot from about 1.5 x 10 to the 6th power to 8 x 10 to the 6th power. Increasing the cone angle is shown to decrease slightly the transition Reynolds number, whereas the effects of changes of Mach number and unit Reynolds number are negligible. When transition occurred within 15 to 20 percent of the model length from the base there was a dropoff in transition Reynolds number. (author)

Loads Due to Controls at Transonic and Low Supersonic Speeds

Some results of recent experimental investigations at supersonic and transonic speeds are presented to show the present status in the estimation of load distributions on controls and adjacent wing surfaces resulting from the deflection of flap controls and spoiler controls. The results indicate that the development of methods for predicting loads associated with controls has not kept pace with the acquisition of experimental data. At low supersonic speeds sweeping the hinge line induces strong three-dimensional-flow characteristics which cannot be treated by the simplified methods previously developed for controls without sweep. At transonic speeds the estimation of loads associated with controls must usually be dependent upon experimental information inasmuch as the latest attempts to predict chordwise and spanwise loadings have met with only limited success.

Tabulated Pressure Data for a Series of Controls on a 60 Degree Delta Wing at Mach Numbers of 1.61 and 2.01

An investigation has been made at Mach numbers of 1.61 and 2.01 and Reynolds numbers from 1.7 X 10 to 7.6 X 10 to determine the pressure distributions over a 60 deg. delta wing having 20 different control configurations. Measurements were made at angles of attack from O deg to 15 deg for control deflections from -30 deg to 30 deg. This report presents the complete tabulated pressure data for the range of test conditions.

An Investigation of the Effects of Heat Transfer on Boundary-Layer Transition on a Parabolic Body of Revolution (NACA RM-10) at a Mach Number of 1.61

Report presents the results of an investigation conducted to determine the effects of heat transfer on boundary-layer transition on a parabolic body of revolution (NACA rm-10 without fins) at Mach number of 1.61 and over a Reynolds number range from 2.5 x 10(6) to 35 x 10(6). The maximum cooling of the model used in these tests corresponded to a temperature ratio (ratio of model-surface temperature to free-stream temperature) of 1.12, a value somewhat higher than the theoretical value required for infinite boundary-layer stability at this Mach number. The maximum heating corresponded to a temperature ratio of about 1.85. Included in the investigation was a study of the effects of surface irregularities and disturbances generated in the airstream on the ability of heat transfer to influence boundary-layer transition.
