Interaction of Polymethyl Methacrylate with Boehmite-Filmed Aluminum Cladding Under Gamma Irradiation

This paper presents an overview of ongoing work to qualify the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) driver fuel elements that have been affected by irradiation-degraded polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) flux wands. Irradiation testing was performed on PMMA material in contact with aluminum clad material. The cladding was prefilmed with a boehmite oxide layer, an important feature of the ATR driver fuel. The effects on the boehmite layer due to gamma irradiation of the PMMA-aluminum clad system were investigated. PMMA embrittlement, followed by softening and degradation, occurred at high radiation levels. Adhesion between the cladding and irradiated PMMA was observed. Flow testing at prototypic ATR flow rates demonstrated the effective removal of the adhered material. Measurements of the boehmite layer thickness were performed, and Raman spectroscopy was utilized to detect the presence of boehmite in the irradiated PMMA material.

Accident Tolerant Fuel Test 2B (ATF-2B) Irradiation Test Report

A fully prototypic testing platform for testing new accident tolerant fuel (ATF) designs for light water reactors has been established in the center flux trap of Idaho National Laboratory’s advanced test reactor (ATR). The irradiation experiment named ATF-2 has completed 7 cycles of prototypic steady state irradiation irradiating 41 test pins to burnups as high as 30 MWd/kgU. Irradiation conditions have been maintained via the loop 2a pressurized water coolant loop and have been monitored through in-situ instrumentation during each cycle. Power and fast neutron flux histories of each of the 41 test pins has been calculated using a combined MCNP, and ORIGIN methodology to provide accurate and reliable power histories on a per pin basis.

Fission Accelerated Steady-state Testing (FAST)

In an effort to accelerate the irradiation time for advanced reactor fuels, a revised capsule design has been analyzed and developed for the Advanced Fuels Campaign (AFC). This design incorporates a highly enriched, reduced diameter fuel pin that is doubly encapsulated by two steel capsules. This design alloys accelerated irradiations and reduced sensitivity to fabrication variances and eccentricities. The capsule designs utilize existing experiment baskets from the AFC capsules in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) outer A position (FAST-OA) and the ATF-1 capsules in the small I position (FAST-SI).
