Low speed performance of a supersonic axisymmetric mixed compression inlet with auxiliary inlets

The aerodynamic performance of a representative supersonic cruise inlet was investigated using a fan simulator coupled to the inlet to provide characteristic noise signatures and to pump the inlet flow. Data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0 to 0.2 for the inlet equipped with an auxiliary inlet system that provided 20 to 40 percent of the fan flow. Results show that inlet performance improved when the inlet bleed systems were sealed; when the freestream Mach number was increased; and when the auxiliary inlets were opened. The inlet flow could not be choked by either centerbody translation or by increasing the fan speed when the 40 percent auxiliary inlet was incorporated. Previously announced in STAR as N83-27992

Performance at Mach 3.52 of a Mach 2.5 all external-compression, two dimensional inlet

A quick-look test was conducted in the 10- by 10-foot supersonic wind tunnel to provide some qualitative information on operating a low Mach number design inlet in a highly oversped condition. The model which is a two-dimensional, three-ramp, all-external-compression inlet designed to match a J-85 turbojet engine at Mach 2.5 was run at Mach 3.52 and zero angle-of-attack and yaw. Results are presented showing the effect of external ramp angle combinations, diffuser ramp position, and amount of bleed.

Wind tunnel and flight performance of the YF-12 inlet system

The steady-state internal performance from 1/3-scale and full-scale wind tunnel models of the YF-12 inlet system is compared with results from flight tests. All systems were thoroughly instrumented for static and total pressure measurements. Results obtained included the inlet mass flows, surface pressure distribution, boundary layer profiles, and detailed total pressure measurements at the engine face. Inlet performance is compared at Mach numbers 2.1 and 2.8 and at several Reynolds numbers over a wide range of inlet operating conditions. Analysis generally shows good agreement in the results between the three systems when inlet conditions are closely matched.
