Direct modulation at L-band using a quadrature modulator with feedback

This paper describes how a high quality modulated signal can be generated directly at the frequency of transmission, using a standard quadrature modulator and other commercially-available, low-cost building blocks. The method uses a feedback technique for automatic correction of carrier leakage, differential gain and phase mismatch errors in the quadrature modulator, and other building blocks, by providing guidance to the digital baseband portion of the modulator. Experimental results are presented for direct modulation at 1.65 GHz.

Theoretical and simulated performance for a novel frequency estimation technique

A low complexity, open-loop, discrete-time, delay-multiply-average (DMA) technique for estimating the frequency offset for digitally modulated MPSK signals is investigated. A nonlinearity is used to remove the MPSK modulation and generate the carrier component to be extracted. Theoretical and simulated performance results are presented and compared to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the variance of the frequency estimation error. For all signal-to-noise ratios (SNR's) above threshold, it is shown that the CRLB can essentially be achieved with linear complexity.

Sloppy-slotted ALOHA

Random access signaling, which allows slotted packets to spill over into adjacent slots, is investigated. It is shown that sloppy-slotted ALOHA can always provide higher throughput than conventional slotted ALOHA. The degree of improvement depends on the timing error distribution. Throughput performance is presented for Gaussian timing error distributions, modified to include timing error corrections. A general channel capacity lower bound, independent of the specific timing error distribution, is also presented.
