CO2 Profiling System for CO2 Storage (a1-level)

The Southern Great Plains (SGP) carbon dioxide flux (CO2FLUX) measurement systems provide half-hour average fluxes of CO2, H2O (latent heat), sensible heat, and momentum. The systems use the eddy covariance technique, which computes the fluxes from the vertical wind speed in combination with the concentrations of CO2 and H2O, temperature, and horizontal wind speed, respectively. A 3D sonic anemometer obtains the wind components and the temperature, while an infrared gas analyzer measures CO2 and H2O. A sub-system also measures half-hour averages of radiation, meteorological, and soil measurements.

Micropulse Lidar Cloud Mask Machine-Learning Value-Added Product Report

Cloud detection algorithms of various techniques have been developed and applied to atmospheric ground-based lidar data to identify cloud boundaries and produce clouds masks. While these algorithms are able to identify a wide variety of cloud types and conditions, it is often observed that the algorithms can still fail to accurately detect clouds that are readily discernible when inspecting the lidar imagery. Based on this observation, an alternative approach for cloud detection is to take advantage of machine-learning capabilities and the trained human eye as an interpreter of lidar images, and in turn, to train a neural network to recognize the desired features in the lidar data.

Aerosol Optical Depth Best Estimate Value-Added Product Report

Four aerosol optical depth (AOD) products are offered by four collocated ground-based instruments deployed at the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory (SGP Central Facility 1 [C1] and Extended Facility 13 [E13]) for more than two decades. Two of these instruments, the multifilter rotating shadowband radiometers (MFRSRs C1 and E13), are sensors with horizontal hemispherical receivers shaded by rotating shadowbands.

Aerosol and Cloud Optical Properties from the ARM Raman Lidars: The Feature Detection and Extinction (RLPROF-FEX) Value-Added Product

Aerosols and their interactions and influence on clouds are among the main sources of uncertainties in radiative direct and indirect forcing (IPCC 2013). Continuous height-resolved measurements of cloud and aerosol optical properties are needed to reduce these uncertainties. Here we describe the Raman Lidar Profiles – Feature detection and Extinction (RLPROF-FEX) Value-Added Product (VAP) derived using Raman lidar data at multiple U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility sites. RLPROF-FEX provides estimates of extinction, backscatter, and depolarization using the algorithm described by Thorsen et al. 2015 and Thorsen and Fu 2015. This document provides a description of the FEX algorithm, its input and output data, and related details about the Raman lidar (RL) system.

Technical note: Using long short-term memory models to fill data gaps in hydrological monitoring networks

Abstract. Quantifying the spatiotemporal dynamics in subsurface hydrological flows over a long time window usually employs a network of monitoring wells. However, such observations are often spatially sparse with potential temporal gaps due to poor quality or instrument failure. In this study, we explore the ability of recurrent neural networks to fill gaps in a spatially distributed time-series dataset. We use a well network that monitors the dynamic and heterogeneous hydrologic exchanges between the Columbia River and its adjacent groundwater aquifer at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford site. This 10-year-long dataset contains hourly temperature, specific conductance, and groundwater table elevation measurements from 42 wells with gaps of various lengths. We employ a long short-term memory (LSTM) model to capture the temporal variations in the observed system behaviors needed for gap filling. The performance of the LSTM-based gap-filling method was evaluated against a traditional autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) method in terms of error statistics and accuracy in capturing the temporal patterns of river corridor wells with various dynamics signatures. Our study demonstrates that the ARIMA models yield better average error statistics, although they tend to have larger errors during time windows with abrupt changes or high-frequency (daily and subdaily) variations. The LSTM-based models excel in capturing both high-frequency and low-frequency (monthly and seasonal) dynamics. However, the inclusion of high-frequency fluctuations may also lead to overly dynamic predictions in time windows that lack such fluctuations. The LSTM can take advantage of the spatial information from neighboring wells to improve the gap-filling accuracy, especially for long gaps in system states that vary at subdaily scales. While LSTM models require substantial training data and have limited extrapolation power beyond the conditions represented in the training data, they afford great flexibility to account for the spatial correlations, temporal correlations, and nonlinearity in data without a priori assumptions. Thus, LSTMs provide effective alternatives to fill in data gaps in spatially distributed time-series observations characterized by multiple dominant frequencies of variability, which are essential for advancing our understanding of dynamic complex systems.
