Integration of Large-Scale Renewable Energy in the Bulk Power System: Lessons from International Experiences

Deployment of increasing amounts of renewable energy (RE) presents certain challenges in reliably integrating larger quantities RE into existing bulk power system infrastructures. RE Bulk power typically refers to large-scale power generation at a centralized facility and in the context of RE can include wind farms, utility-scale solar, geothermal, hydro and biomass facilities. Based on international experiences, several actions and related good practices have emerged to support the deployment of RE in the bulk power system. This paper provides a review of emerging international best practices that support the integration of large-scale RE; examples of country-level efforts in implementing these practices; and key considerations for any country pursuing bulk power sector transformation.

The Resilient Energy Platform

The provision of reliable, secure, and affordable electricity is essential to power economic growth and development. The power system is at risk from an array of natural, human-caused, and technological threats, which can cause everything from power interruption to chronic undersupply of energy. It is critical for policymakers, planners, and system operators to safeguard their power systems from these threats by proactively planning for future needs and investing in resilient power systems. Developed through the USAID-NREL Partnership, the Resilient Energy Platform is a website that provides expertly curated resources, training materials, data, tools, and direct technical assistance in planning resilient, sustainable, and secure power systems.

Renewable Energy Data and Decision Support for Kazakhstan - RE Data Explorer in Action

In 2016, with support from USAID Central Asia and the U.S. Department of State Leadership Compact, and in collaboration with the Government of Kazakhstan and other Central Asian governments, NREL launched the RE Data Explorer for Central Asia, including world-class wind and solar resource data for Kazakhstan and surrounding countries. The RE Data Explorer provides an easy- to-use online platform for users to view, analyze, and download high-quality datasets for informed decision-making. The RE Data Explorer is part of a broader platform called the RE Explorer that provides expertly curated materials and knowledge resources to enable data-driven decisions. This case study documents how the RE Data Explorer was used to support renewable energy decision-making in Kazakhstan.

Power Sector Resilience Planning Guidebook: A Self-Guided Reference for Practitioners

This guidebook is a reference for power sector resilience planning that introduces policymakers, power sector investors, planners, system operators, and other energy-sector stakeholders to the key concepts and steps involved in power sector resilience planning. Users can then apply this knowledge in the development of strategic, country-specific processes and identify actions that increase power sector resilience. This guidebook can be used as a stand-alone resource or shared with participants at stakeholder workshops to facilitate discussions and complete key steps of a resilience planning process.

Renewable Energy Data, Analysis, and Decisions Viewed through a Case Study in Bangladesh: Preprint

Many developing countries around the world have signaled their intention to transition their energy sectors to rely on cleaner sources of electricity generation for a variety of reasons that may include complying with their Nationally Determined Contributions (in support of the Paris Climate Agreement), increasing energy security, or reducing air pollution. Renewable energy resources are increasingly a cost competitive option for new electricity generation; however, nations must consider renewable energy potential if they wish to increase these technologies in their electricity generation mix. Yet, goal setting, policymaking, grid modeling, and investment decisions that will enable renewable energy development all depend on the existence and quality of renewable energy resource data. This paper aims to summarize the relationship between renewable energy data, analysis, and decision making for developing countries seeking to transition their energy sector and to consider Bangladesh as a case study of a country that has worked with development organizations and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to develop a national inventory of renewable energy resource data to enable critical decision making.
