Water additives improve the efficiency of violet perovskite light-emitting diodes

High external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) have been achieved for blue, green, red, and near-infrared perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), and their energy efficiencies are approaching the efficiencies of III-V-based LEDs. Beyond the visible regime, ultraviolet light offers great promise for many applications such as disinfection. However, PeLEDs demonstrate poor performance in the violet/ultraviolet region, with reports of violet PeLED performance hindered by poor thin-film quality. In this work, we improve the uniformity of perovskite films by adding water into the precursor solution to engineer the crystallization process of spin-coated 2D perovskites. The resulting improved film uniformity, coupled with the reduction in nanoplate size, reduces leakage current and promotes faster recombination rates. The fabricated PeLEDs deliver bright violet emission at 408 nm with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.41%, a 5-fold increase over control devices. Furthermore, this work demonstrates viable steps toward cost-effective, efficient ultraviolet PeLEDs.

Compositions and methods for the downconversion of light

The present invention generally relates to composition and methods for downconverting light. In some embodiments, the composition and methods comprise an organic material, a nanocrystal, and a ligand capable of facilitating energy transfer between the organic material and the nanocrystal. In certain embodiments, the nanocrystal has a first excited energy state with an energy less than a triplet energy state of the organic material. The organic material, in some embodiments, may be aromatic and/or include one or more pi-conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds. In some cases, incident light may be absorbed by the organic material to produce two triplet excitons. The triplet excitons may then transfer to the nanocrystal via the ligand, where they can undergo recombination, resulting in the formation low energy photons.

Anthracene Diphosphate Ligands for CdSe Quantum Dots; Molecular Design for Efficient Upconversion

Quantum dot (QD)-sensitized photon upconversion follows a multi-step energy transfer process from the QD to transmitter ligand to a soluble annihilator. Using a novel 10-R-anthracene-1,8-diphosphoric acid (R = octyl, 2- hexyldecyl, phenyl) ligand with high binding affinity for CdSe QD surfaces, we demonstrate a photon upconversion process that is limited by the transmitter to annihilator transfer efficiency. Using 1 H NMR spectroscopy, we demonstrate that these bidentate diphosphate ligands rapidly and irreversibly displace two carboxylate ligands. These ligands mediate energy transfer from the photoexcited QDs to a triplet annihilator (1,10-diphenylanthracene), producing overall photon upconversion quantum efficiencies as high as 17%, the highest for QDs with no shells. In conclusion, transient absorption spectroscopy shows that the anthracene dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) ligand supports a 3.4 fold longer triplet state lifetime compared to 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (299.9 ± 9.5 vs 88.2 ± 2.1 μs), increasing the probability of energy transfer.
