Unique characteristics of ERTS

The manned spaceflights have demonstrated what film cameras can do in space and they could provide a data source from which maps would be one of the principal products. ERTS was not defined with mapping as one of its principal objectives, but with ERTS-1 in orbit certain unique characteristics or advantages of the electronic transmission (TV) earth sensing system become apparent to the mapmaker. Six of the more obvious advantages over aircraft and satellite film systems are: (1) long life and coverage; (2) near real time; (3) orthogonality; (4) radiometric fidelity; (5) extension into the near IR wavelengths; and (6) extension into the thermal wavelengths.

Overall evaluation of ERTS imagery for cartographic application

The author has identified the following significant results. As a result of an examination of a set of precision processed images, the precision processor appears to be working properly and geometric quality of RBV and MSS precision and RBV bulk imagery is adequate for 1:250,000 scale while the MSS bulk is compatible to 1:1,000,000 scale at best. However, the nongeometric quality of the MSS bulk is good for 1:250,000 scale while the MSS precision is sufficient for 1:500,000 scale. The nongeometric quality of the RBV bulk images is good for 1:250,000 to 1:500,000 scale while that of the RBV precision processed images is only rated fair and sufficient for 1:500,000 to 1:1,000,000 scale. Attempts to warp a grid to MSS bulk imagery and thus produce a useable cartographic product are being examined.

Cartographic application of ERTS imagery

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. Results of a quick look of selected ERTS-1 imagery with respect to cartographic applications and products are presented. The term cartographic is applied to graphics that have been related to an accepted reference figure of the earth within a prescribed degree of accuracy. The results are presented in the form of figures covering: (1) nongeometric relative image quality; (2) geometric properties (preliminary); (3) first phase photoimage products; (4) intermediate phase photoimage products; (5) optimum phase orthophotoquad products; and (6) cartographic applications. Because of its unique vantage point of 920 km, ERTS-1 will be a powerful mapping tool by providing extensive and continuous up-to-date data.

Earth resources cartography program

Progress is reported on efforts to develop techniques of using space vehicle and high altitude aircraft imagery in cartography projects. Major efforts were made to develop an operational system for isolating specified themes from the imagery.

Cartography

The EROS Cartography Program emphasizes the relationship between topographic activities of the U. S. Geological Service and those at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center. Its objectives are to apply remote sensing systems on high altitude aircraft and orbiting satellites for topographic, planimetric, and thematic mapping of the earth's surface. The goal is to produce specially processed imagery from which useful information can be derived for a varity of disciplines associated with earth resources.
