Laser transit anemometer measurements of a JANNAF nozzle base velocity flow field

Velocity flow fields of a nozzle jet exhausting into a supersonic flow were surveyed. The measurements were obtained with a laser transit anemometer (LTA) system in the time domain with a correlation instrument. The LTA data is transformed into the velocity domain to remove the error that occurs when the data is analyzed in the time domain. The final data is shown in velocity vector plots for positions upstream, downstream, and in the exhaust plane of the jet nozzle.

Instrument for determining coincidence and elapse time between independent sources of random sequential events

An instrument that receives pulses from a primary external source and one or more secondary external sources and determines when there is coincidence between the primary and one of the secondary sources is described. The instrument generates a finite time window (coincidence aperture) during which coincidence is defined to have occurred. The time intervals between coincidence apertures in which coincidences occur are measured.

Laser velocimeter (autocovariance) buffer interface

A laser velocimeter (autocovariance) buffer interface (LVABI) was developed to serve as the interface between three laser velocimeter high speed burst counters and a minicomputer. A functional description is presented of the instrument and its unique features which allow the studies of flow velocity vector analysis, turbulence power spectra, and conditional sampling of other phenomena. Typical applications of the laser velocimeter using the LVABI are presented to illustrate its various capabilities.

Multichannel coincidence circuit

Digital circuit detects coincident pulses in two or more channels, and records time between primary pulses that are coincident with secondary pulses. Circuit has three major blocks: interval time subcircuit, measurement control subcircuit, and time sequence generator. Timer can be used in laser velocimeter or other instruments receiving data at irregular rates from two or more sources.

Processing laser velocimeter high-speed burst counter data

The statistical calculations of the mean and potential bias errors are considered with respect to their applicability to the randomly sampled velocity data obtained from a laser velocimeter. Techniques for displaying the resulting data in the form of arrow plots, flow streamline plots, and contour maps are also discussed. A description is presented of the operation of a new hardware interface between the signal processing electronics and the computer. The interface has been constructed to make it possible to use recently developed data processing techniques for obtaining turbulent power spectra from laser velocimeter data. Additional capabilities which were built into the interface allow the measurement of the velocity vector for each particle passing through the laser velocimeter sample window. By processing the data with extended versions of the turbulent power spectra techniques, cross spectra, interactions between velocity magnitude fluctuations, and flow angle fluctuations may be investigated.
