Micro-Cracking Detection in Laminated Composites

Porosity and fatigue cracking are two critical factors that affect the performance and safety of cryogenic fuel tanks and feedlines made from unlined laminated or weaved carbon/epoxy materials. This paper presents the experiments to induce fatigue cracking of laminated composites through thermal cycling as well as the feasibility of using Thermography and Ultrasound Spectroscopy technology (UT) to detect and measure such micro-cracking. Carbon/epoxy laminated composite panels were built and cut into strips. These specimens were partially submerged in liquid nitrogen while subjected to various loads on a test machine. Edges of some specimens were polished and etched to determine the degree of micro-cracking. The rest of specimens were then examined with Thermography and Ultrasound Spectroscopy NDE systems to investigate the feasibility of finding such micro-cracking in the laminated composites. Thermography is utilized to determine changes in thermal diffusivity. The degree of cracking may reduce the apparent thermal diffusivity and therefore change the thermal response on the surface. Thermography testing was conducted on a group of specimens where it is desired to have some correlation between the predetermined stress and the thermography data. Ultrasound Spectroscopy was used to determine peak changes between the pre-stressed and stressed samples. Data from the inspections were analyzed and the results are presented in this paper.

Effect of Thermal Diffusivity on the Detectability of TNDE

The effect of thermal diffusively on the defect detectability in Carbon/Epoxy composite panels by transient thermography is presented in this paper. A series of Finite Element Models were constructed and analyzed to simulate the transient heat transfer phenomenon during Thermographic Non-destructive Evaluation (TNDE) of composite panels with square defects. Six common carbon fibers were considered. The models were built for composites with various combinations of fibers and volumetric ratios. Finite Element Analysis of these models showed the trends of the detectable range and the maximum thermal contrast versus the thermal diffusivity of various composites. Additionally, the trends of defect size to depth ratio and the thermal contrast has been investigated.

Composite structures for magnetosphere imager spacecraft

Results of a trade study addressing the issues and benefits in using carbon fiber reinforced composites for the Magnetosphere Imager (MI) spacecraft are presented. The MI mission is now part of the Sun/Earth Connection Program. To qualify for this category, new technology and innovative methods to reduce the cost and size have to be considered. Topics addressed cover: (1) what is a composite, including advantages and disadvantages of composites and carbon/graphite fibers; and (2) structural design for MI, including composite design configuration, material selection, and analysis of composite structures.
