ComDMFT v.2.0: Fully self-consistent ab initio GW+EDMFT for the electronic structure of correlated quantum materials

ComDMFT is a parallel computational package designed to study the electronic structure of correlated quantum materials from first principles. Our approach is based on the combination of first-principles methods and dynamical mean field theories. In version 2.0, we implemented fully-diagrammatic GW+EDMFT from first-principles self-consistently. In this approach, correlated electrons are treated within full GW+EDMFT and the rest are treated within full-GW, seamlessly. Further, this implementation enables the electronic structure calculation of quantum materials with weak, intermediate, and strong electron correlation without prior knowledge of the degree of electron correlation.

Infinite-layer nickelates as Ni-e $g$ Hund’s metals

The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-$δ$ Sr $δ$ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical viewpoint, this class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil a physics hidden in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund’s coupling in Ni-$d$ orbitals gives rise to multiple signatures of Hund’s metallic phase in Ni-e $g$ orbitals. The proposed picture of the nickelates as an e $g$ (two orbital) Hund’s metal differs from the picture of the Fe-based superconductors as a five orbital Hund’s metal as well as the picture of the cuprates as doped charge transfer insulators. Our finding uncovers a new class of the Hund’s metals and has potential implications for the broad range of correlated two orbital systems away from half-filling.

Hund Physics Landscape of Two-Orbital Systems

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RE 1–δ Sr δ NiO 2 (RE = Nd, Pr), we study the role of Hund coupling J in a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard model, which has been on the periphery of the attention. Here, a region of negative effective Coulomb interaction of this model is revealed to be differentiated from three- and five-orbital models in their typical Hund metal active fillings. We identify distinctive regimes including four different correlated metals, one of which stems from the proximity to a Mott insulator, while the other three, which we call “intermediate” metal, weak Hund metal, and valence-skipping metal, from the effect of J being away from Mottness. Defining criteria characterizing these metals is suggested, establishing the existence of Hund metallicity in two-orbital systems.

Spatial locality of electronic correlations in LiFeAs

In this work, we address the question of the degree of spatial nonlocality of the self-energy in the iron-based superconductors, a subject which is receiving considerable attention. Using LiFeAs as a prototypical example, we extract the self-energy from angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data. We use two distinct electronic structure references: density functional theory in the local density approximation and linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW (LQSGW). We find that with the LQSGW reference, spatially local dynamical correlations provide a consistent description of the experimental data, and account for some surprising aspects of the data such as the substantial out-of-plane dispersion of the electron Fermi surface having dominant xz/yz character. Hence, correlations effects can be separated into static nonlocal contributions well described by LQSGW and dynamical local contributions. Hall effect and resistivity data are shown to be consistent with this description.

ComDMFT: A massively parallel computer package for the electronic structure of correlated-electron systems

ComDMFT is a massively parallel computational package to study the electronic structure of correlated-electron systems (CES). Our approach is a parameter-free method based on ab initio linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW (LQSGW) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The non-local part of the electronic self-energy is treated within ab initio LQSGW and the local strong correlation is treated within DMFT. In addition to ab initio LQSGW+DMFT, charge self-consistent LDA+DMFT methodology is also implemented, enabling multiple methods in one open-source platform for the electronic structure of CES. Here, this package can be extended for future developments to implement other methodologies to treat CES.

ComDMFT

ComDMFT is an ab initio code for simulating correlated quantum materials with crystalline symmetry. It combines DFT or qsGW calculations with impurity problems describing strong on-atom correlations. The impurity problem is set up using Wannier90 and cRPA, and can be solved with DMFT and CTQMC.
