MCP-PMT development at Argonne for particle identification

The proposed high-energy high-luminosity polarized Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) demands excellent particle identification over a wide range of particles momenta to achieve the best separation between signal and background particles. Various Cherenkov imaging detector sub-systems are being considered in EIC detector concepts for hadron identification for particles momenta up to 50 GeV/c. One important challenge in this case is to provide a reliable highly pixelated photosensor working in the high radiation and high magnetic field environment. The recently commercialized Large Area Picosecond Photo-Detector (LAPPD) provides a promising low-cost photosensor solution for the various EIC Cherenkov imaging sub-systems. Optimization of the phtosensor design for high magnetic field tolerance, precision timing resolution, and pixelated readout was performed at Argonne National Laboratory with 6 x 6 cm(2) microchannel plate photomultipliers. The techniques and optimized design parameters would be transferrable to industrial partners for low-cost LAPPD production to achieve the demonstrated performance.

Reflectivity and PDE of VUV4 Hamamatsu SiPMs in liquid xenon

Considering reflective properties of materials and photodetection efficiency (PDE) of photodetectors is important for optimizing energy resolution and sensitivity of the next generation neutrinoless double beta decay, direct detection dark matter, and neutrino oscillation experiments that will use noble liquid gases, such as nEXO, DARWIN, DarkSide-20k, and DUNE . Little information is currently available about reflectivity and PDE in liquid noble gases, because such measurements are difficult to conduct in a cryogenic environment and at short enough wavelengths. Here we report a measurement of specular reflectivity and relative PDE of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with 50 μ m micro-cells conducted with xenon scintillation light ( ~ 175 nm) in liquid xenon. The specular reflectivity at 15 o incidence of three samples of VUV4 SiPMs is found to be 30.4 ± 1.4%, 28.6 ± 1.3%, and 28.0 ± 1.3%, respectively. The PDE at normal incidence differs by ± 8% (standard deviation) among the three devices. The angular dependence of the reflectivity and PDE was further measured for one of the SiPMs. Both the reflectivity and PDE decrease as the angle of incidence increases. This is the first measurement of an angular dependence of PDE and reflectivity of a SiPM in liquid xenon.

The NASA/GSFC hydrogen maser program: A review of recent data

Data is presented on the phase and frequency stability, over time periods extending to one week, of the new NR field operable hydrogen masers developed by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and the older NX and NP field operable hydrogen masers developed by Goddard Space Flight Center and maintained and upgraded by Bendix Field Engineering Corporation (BFEC). Data is presented on the NR masers in the laboratory showing frequency stabilities well into the 10 to the -15th power range and phase stabilities well into the 100 ps range for periods of up to one day. Data is presented on upgraded NP masers in the laboratory showing that the frequency stability has been improved substantially to virtually the NR level. VLBI data is presented on the phase difference between NX-2 at Owens Valley, California and NR-2 at Fort Davis, Texas for a one week period showing, after removal of a constant frequency drift, a 350 ps RMS phase stability.
