NASA's New Millennium ST6 Project

NASA s New Millennium Program validates advanced technologies in space and thus lowers the risk for the first mission user. The New Millennium ST6 project has developed two advanced, experimental technologies for use on future missions. These technologies are: 1) the Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE), a demonstration of autonomous, science-driven spacecraft command and control; and 2) the Inertial Stellar Compass (ISC). These technologies will improve a spacecraft's ability (with ASE) to make intelligent decisions on what information to gather and send back to the ground; and (with ISC) determine its own attitude and adjust its pointing.

Onboard autonomy on the Three Corner Sat mission

In 2003, the student-built three satellite constellation Three Corner Sat (3CS) Mission will demonstrate onboard autonomy including: science data validation and prioritization, mission re-planning, and robust execution. Future observations will be planned onboard based on the quality of aquired science, available memory and power, and anticipated downlinks. These capabilities will allow 3CS to aquire additional science data if resources are available and to return only the highest quality science data.

Autonomous sciencecraft experiment : NASA New Millennium Program

In 2006, the Air Force TechSat 21 mission will fly the Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE). ASE will perform onboard: science analysis, mission re-planning, and robust execution. These technologies will enable TechSat 21 to respond onboard to sciene opportunities by retargeting future science observations and returning only the most important science data. This capability can dramatically increase science return and is central to future mission concepts to monitor dynamic phenomena such as lo volcanoes, the Europa ice crust, and Martian sandstorms.

Goal-driven Automation of a Deep Space Communications Station: A Case Study in Knowledge Engineering for Plan Generation and Execution

This paper describes the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques for plan generation, plan execution, and plan monitoring to automate a Deep Space Communication Station. This automation allows a Communication station to respond to a set of tracking goals by appropriately reconfiguring the communications hardware and software to provide the requested communications services.
