Performance analysis and simulation of the SPS reference phase control system

The major elements required in the operation of an SPS which employs retrodirectivity as a means of pointing the beam to Earth include the spacetenna, the rectenna, and the pilot signal transmitter. The phase control system is faced with several problems: (1) path delay variations due to imperfect SPS circular orbits; (2) ionospheric effects; (3) initial phase beam forming; (4) beam pointing; (5) beam safing; (6) high power phase noise effects; and (7) interference. The use of SOLARISM, a computer program to select pilot signal parameters and evaluate SPS performance is described.

A modified Barrett-Lampard expansion and its application to bandpass nonlinearities with both AM-AM and AM-PM conversion

A two-dimensional Barrett-Lampard expansion is developed to handle two-dimensional nonlinear systems with random Gaussian inputs. The theory is applied to the problem of evaluating the mean signal and the inphase and quadrature noise correlation functions at the output of a TWT nonlinearity exhibiting arbitrary AM-AM and AM-PM characteristics, when the input consists of a narrow-band signal and Gaussian noise. As a specialized application, the classical problem of determining the coherent and incoherent noise correlation functions at the output of a power-law bandpass nonlinearity is also considered. The results are of interest in assessing the performance of coherent satellite communication channels. The theory developed is accompanied by numerical examples of practical interest.

A ground based phase control system for the solar power satellite, volume 4

A ground phase control system is studied as an alternative approach to the current reference retrodirective phase control system in order to simplify the spaceborne hardware requirement. Based on waveform selections, functional subsystems to implement the ground-based phase control concept are identified and functionally represented. It was concluded that the feasibility of the concept becomes unclear if the conditions of the ionosphere and satellite motion are not met.

A ground based phase control system for the solar power satellite. Executive summary, volume 1, phase 3

The Solar Power Satellite (SPS) concept and the reference phase control system investigated in earlier efforts are reviewed. A summary overview of the analysis and selection of the pilot signal and power transponder design is presented along with the SOLARSIM program development and the simulated SPS phase control performance. Evaluations of the ground based phase control system as an alternate phase control concept are summarized.

SPS pilot signal design and power transponder analysis, volume 2, phase 3

The problem of pilot signal parameter optimization and the related problem of power transponder performance analysis for the Solar Power Satellite reference phase control system are addressed. Signal and interference models were established to enable specifications of the front end filters including both the notch filter and the antenna frequency response. A simulation program package was developed to be included in SOLARSIM to perform tradeoffs of system parameters based on minimizing the phase error for the pilot phase extraction. An analytical model that characterizes the overall power transponder operation was developed. From this model, the effects of different phase noise disturbance sources that contribute to phase variations at the output of the power transponders were studied and quantified. Results indicate that it is feasible to hold the antenna array phase error to less than one degree per power module for the type of disturbances modeled.

Performance analysis and simulation of the SPS reference phase control system

The solar power satellite (SPS) concept envisions several hundred thousand synchronized microwave power amplifiers operating in parallel to produce an aggregate power output of 5-10 GW. This power is to be transferred to earth with the aid of a microwave/millimeter-wave beaming system operating in a synchronous orbit. The reference phase control system is considered along with aspects of pilot signal parameter selection. A power transponder analysis is conducted and an SPS performance evaluation is performed. Attention is given to system jitters and imperfections, the definition of power transfer efficiency, and the effects of system imperfections on SPS efficiency. It is found that the power transfer efficiency is relatively insensitive to the amplitude jitters. However, the effects of location jitters can produce a severe degradation of efficiency.

SPS phase control system performance via analytical simulation

A solar power satellite transmission system which incorporates automatic beam forming, steering, and phase control is discussed. The phase control concept centers around the notation of an active retrodirective phased array as a means of pointing the beam to the appropriate spot on Earth. The transmitting antenna (spacetenna) directs the high power beam so that it focuses on the ground-based receiving antenna (rectenna). A combination of analysis and computerized simulation was conducted to determine the far field performance of the reference distribution system, and the beam forming and microwave power generating systems.
