Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's minicomputer vs. the laser

Review of some of the problems encountered in replacing a CDC 6400, that was used for supplying a network of laser tracking stations with predictions, by an 8K Data General 1200 minicomputer with a teletype for I/O. Before the replacement, the predictions were expensive to compute and to transmit, and were clumsy logistically. The achieved improvements are described, along with every step it took to accomplish them, and the incurred costs.

A more general system for Poisson series manipulation.

The design of a working Poisson series processor system is described that is more general than those currently in use. This system is the result of a series of compromises among efficiency, generality, ease of programing, and ease of use. The most general form of coefficients that can be multiplied efficiently is pointed out, and the place of general-purpose algebraic systems in celestial mechanics is discussed.

Computation of Hansen coefficients

Some procedures are presented for computer development of Hansen coefficients. The method of Von Zeipel and Andoyer was found to be most efficient. A table extends the method from 7th to 12th order.
