A topological Hund nodal line antiferromagnet

The interplay of topology, magnetism, and correlations gives rise to intriguing phases of matter. In this study, through state-of-the-art angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory, and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we visualize a fourfold degenerate Dirac nodal line at the boundary of the bulk Brillouin zone in the antiferromagnet YMn 2 Ge 2 . We further demonstrate that this gapless, antiferromagnetic Dirac nodal line is enforced by the combination of magnetism, space-time inversion symmetry, and nonsymmorphic lattice symmetry. The corresponding drumhead surface states traverse the whole surface Brillouin zone. YMn 2 Ge 2 thus serves as a platform to exhibit the interplay of multiple degenerate nodal physics and antiferromagnetism. Interestingly, the magnetic nodal line displays a d-orbital dependent renormalization along its trajectory in momentum space, thereby manifesting Hund's coupling. Our findings offer insights into the effect of electronic correlations on magnetic Dirac nodal lines, leading to an antiferromagnetic Hund nodal line.

A hybrid topological quantum state in an elemental solid

Topology and interactions are foundational concepts in the modern understanding of quantum matter. Their nexus yields three important research directions: (1) the competition between distinct interactions, as in several intertwined phases, (2) the interplay between interactions and topology that drives the phenomena in twisted layered materials and topological magnets, and (3) the coalescence of several topological orders to generate distinct novel phases. The first two examples have grown into major areas of research, although the last example remains mostly unexplored, mainly because of the lack of a material platform for experimental studies. Here, using tunnelling microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy and a theoretical analysis, we unveil a ‘hybrid’ topological phase of matter in the simple elemental-solid arsenic. Through a unique bulk-surface-edge correspondence, we uncover that arsenic features a conjoined strong and higher-order topology that stabilizes a hybrid topological phase. Although momentum-space spectroscopy measurements show signs of topological surface states, real-space microscopy measurements unravel a unique geometry of topologically induced step-edge conduction channels revealed on various natural nanostructures on the surface. Using theoretical models, we show that the existence of gapless step-edge states in arsenic relies on the simultaneous presence of both a non-trivial strong Z 2 invariant and a non-trivial higher-order topological invariant, which provide experimental evidence for hybrid topology. Finally, our study highlights pathways for exploring the interplay of different band topologies and harnessing the associated topological conduction channels in engineered quantum or nano-devices.

Untangling charge-order dependent bulk states from surface effects in a topological kagome metal ScV 6 Sn 6

Kagome metals with charge density wave (CDW) order exhibit a broad spectrum of intriguing quantum phenomena. The recent discovery of the novel kagome CDW compound ScV 6 Sn 6 has spurred significant interest. However, understanding the interplay between CDW and the bulk electronic structure has been obscured by a profusion of surface states and terminations in this quantum material. Here, in this study, we employ photoemission spectroscopy and potassium dosing to elucidate the complete bulk band structure of ScV 6 Sn 6 , revealing multiple van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. We surprisingly discover a robust spin-polarized topological Dirac surface resonance state at the M point within the twofold van Hove singularities. Assisted by first-principles calculations, the temperature dependence of the k z -resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectrum provides unequivocal evidence for the proposed $\sqrt{3}$×$\sqrt{3}$×3 charge order over other candidates. Our work not only enhances the understanding of the CDW-dependent bulk and surface states in ScV 6 Sn 6 , but also establishes an essential foundation for potential manipulation of the CDW order in kagome materials.

Quantum transport response of topological hinge modes

Electronic topological phases are typified by the conducting surface states that exist on the boundary of an insulating three-dimensional bulk. While the transport response of the two-dimensional surface states has been studied, the quantum response of the one-dimensional hinge modes has not been demonstrated. Here we provide evidence for quantum transport in gapless topological hinge states existing within the insulating bulk and surface energy gaps in the intrinsic topological insulator α-Bi 4 Br 4 . Our magnetoresistance measurements reveal pronounced Aharonov–Bohm oscillations that are periodic in h/e (where h denotes Planck’s constant and e is the electron charge). The observed periodicity evinces quantum interference of electrons circumnavigating around the hinges. We also demonstrate that the h/e oscillations evolve as a function of magnetic field orientation, following the interference paths along the hinge modes that are allowed by topology and symmetry. Furthermore, our findings reveal the quantum transport response of topological hinge modes with both topological nature and quantum coherence, which can eventually be applied to the development of efficient topological electronic devices.

Ultrahigh supercurrent density in a two-dimensional topological material

Ongoing advances in superconductors continue to revolutionize technology thanks to the increasingly versatile and robust availability of lossless supercurrents. In particular, high supercurrent density can lead to more efficient and compact power transmission lines, high-field magnets, as well as high-performance nanoscale radiation detectors and superconducting spintronics. In this work, we report the discovery of an unprecedentedly high superconducting critical current density (17 MA / cm 2 at 0 T and 7 MA / cm 2 at 8 T) in 1T'–WS 2 , exceeding those of all reported two-dimensional superconductors to date. 1T'–WS 2 features a strongly anisotropic (both in- and out-of-plane) superconducting state that violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit signaling the presence of unconventional superconductivity. Spectroscopic imaging of the vortices further substantiates the anisotropic nature of the superconducting state. More intriguingly, the normal state of 1T'–WS 2 carries topological properties. The band structure obtained via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations points to a Z 2 topological invariant. The concomitance of topology and superconductivity in 1T'–WS 2 establishes it as a topological superconductor candidate, which is promising for the development of quantum computing technology.

Causal structure of interacting Weyl fermions in condensed matter systems

Abstract The spacetime light cone is central to the definition of causality in the theory of relativity. Recently, links between relativistic and condensed matter physics have been uncovered, where relativistic particles can emerge as quasiparticles in the energy-momentum space of matter. Here, we unveil an energy-momentum analogue of the spacetime light cone by mapping time to energy, space to momentum, and the light cone to the Weyl cone. We show that two Weyl quasiparticles can only interact to open a global energy gap if they lie in each other’s energy-momentum dispersion cones–analogous to two events that can only have a causal connection if they lie in each other’s light cones. Moreover, we demonstrate that the causality of surface chiral modes in quantum matter is entangled with the causality of bulk Weyl fermions. Furthermore, we identify a unique quantum horizon region and an associated ‘thick horizon’ in the emergent causal structure.
