In Crystallo Snapshots of Rh 2 -Catalyzed C–H Amination

While X-ray crystallography routinely provides structural characterization of kinetically stable pre-catalysts and intermediates, elucidation of the structures of transient reactive intermediates, which are intimately engaged in bond-breaking and -making during catalysis, is generally not possible. Here, we demonstrate in crystallo synthesis of Rh 2 nitrenoids that participate in catalytic C-H amination, and characterize these transient intermediates as triplet adducts of Rh 2 . Further, we observe the impact of coordinating substrate, which is present in excess during catalysis, on the structure of transient Rh 2 nitrenoids. By providing structural characterization of authentic C-H functionali-zation intermediates, and not kinetically stabilized model complexes, these experiments provide the opportunity to define critical structure-activity relationships.

High oxygen pressure floating zone growth and crystal structure of the metallic nickelates R4Ni3O10 ( R=La,Pr )

Single crystals of the metallic Ruddlesden-Popper trilayer nickelates R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) were successfully grown using an optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure ( p O 2 ) of 20 bar for La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and 140 bar for Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 . Furthermore, a combination of synchrotron and laboratory x-ray single-crystal diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and measurements of physical properties revealed that R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) crystallizes in the monoclinic P 2 1 / a ( Z = 2 ) space group at room temperature, and that a metastable orthorhombic phase ( Bmab ) can be trapped by postgrowth rapid cooling. Both La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 crystals undergo a metal-to-metal transition (MMT) below room temperature. In the case of Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT is found at 157.6 K. For La 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT depends on the lattice symmetry: 147.5 K for Bmab vs 138.6 K for P 2 1 / a . Lattice anomalies were found at the MMT that, when considered together with the pronounced dependence of the transition temperature on subtle structural differences between Bmab and P 2 1 / a phases, demonstrate a not insignificant coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in these trilayer nickelates.

Determination of the dehydration pathway in a flexible metal–organic framework by dynamic in situ x-ray diffraction

Understanding guest exchange processes in metal–organic frameworks is an important step toward the rational design of functional materials with tailor-made properties. The dehydration of the flexible metal-organic framework [Co(AIP)(bpy)0.5(H2O)]•2H2O was studied by novel in situ dynamic x-ray diffraction techniques. The complex mechanism of dehydration, along with the as-yet unreported metastable structures, was determined. The structural information obtained by the application of these techniques helps to elucidate the important guest–host interactions involved in shaping the structural landscape of the framework lattice and to highlight the importance of utilizing this technique in the characterization of functional framework materials.

Local structure study on magnetostrictive material Tb 1–x Dy x Fe 2

Tb 1–x Dy x Fe 2 system has attracted more research interest due to the large magnetostrictive effect. The crystal structures and physical properties have been well studied, but research studies on their local structures are still rare. As such, in this work, the local structure of Tb 1–x Dy x Fe 2 samples was studied using the pair distribution function and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. The results demonstrate that the system owns the same local crystal symmetry with its average structure in the ferromagnetic phase, and the crystal lattice of the system is more ordered with increasing Dy content, indicating that the Dy-rich tetragonal phase is more stable than the Tb-rich rhombohedral phase. The different roles of metallic bonds in affecting the crystal lattice are presented. The weak Fe 1 –Fe 2 bonds influenced by the local environment such as local stress from randomly distributed nanodomains could originate the anomalies in the lattice, resulting in the more ordered and stable Dy-rich phase than the Tb-rich phase.

Pressure-Thresholded Response in Cylindrically Shocked Cyclotrimethylene Trinitramine (RDX)

We demonstrate a strongly thresholded response in cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) when it is cylindrically shocked using a novel waveguide geometry. Using ultrafast single-shot multi-frame imaging, we demonstrate that <100 μm diameter single crystals of RDX embedded in a polymer host deform along preferential planes for >100 ns after the shock first arrives in the crystal. We use in situ imaging and time-resolved photoemission to demonstrate that short-lived chemistry occurs with complex deformation pathways. Using scanning electron microscopy and ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering, we demonstrate that the shock-induced dynamics leave behind porous crystals, with pore shapes and sizes that change significantly with shock pressure. A threshold pressure of ~12 GPa at the center of convergence separated the single-mode planar crystal deformations from the chemistry-coupled multi-plane dynamics at higher pressures. Our observations indicate preferential directions for deformation in our cylindrically shocked system, despite the applied stress along many different crystallographic planes.
