Recent advance progress of HL-3 experiments

Since the first plasma realized in 2020, a series of key systems on HL-3 (known as HL-2M before) tokamak have been equipped/upgraded, including in-vessel components (the first wall, lower divertor, and toroidal cryogenic/water-cooling/baking/glow discharge systems, etc.), auxiliary heating system of 11 MW, and 28 diagnostic systems (to measure the plasma density, electron temperature, radiation, magnetic field, etc.). Magnet field systems were commissioned firstly for divertor plasma discharges. During the 2nd experimental campaign of HL-3 tokamak, several great progresses have been achieved. Firstly, the successful operation with plasma current larger than 1 MA was achieved under a divertor configuration. Secondly, the advanced divertor concept with two distinct snowflake configurations was realized. It is found that the distribution of ion saturation current and heat flux on bottom plate becomes wide due to magnetic surface expansion, demonstrating the advantage of such configuration in the heat flux mitigation. In addition, using the combination of NBI, ECRH and LHCD, the standard sawtoothing high confinement mode of megampere plasma was firstly accessed on the HL-3. The successful commissioning of HL-3 is beneficial for the initial operation of ITER.

A hill-sliding strategy for initialization of Gaussian clusters in the multidimensional space

A hill sliding technique was devised to extract Gaussian clusters from the multivariate probability density estimate of sample data for the first step of iterative unsupervised classification. Each cluster was assumed to posses a unimodal normal distribution. A clustering function proposed distinguished elements of a cluster under formation from the rest in the feature space. Initial clusters were extracted one by one according to the hill sliding tactics. A dimensionless cluster compactness parameter was proposed as a universal measure of cluster goodness and used satisfactorily in test runs with LANDSAT multispectral scanner data. The normalized divergence, defined by the cluster divergence divided by the entropy of the entire sample data, was utilized as a general separability measure between clusters. An overall clustering objective function was set forth in terms of cluster covariance matrices, from which the cluster compactness measure could be deduced. Minimal improvement of initial data partitioning was evaluated by this objective function in eliminating scattered sparse data points. The hill sliding clustering technique developed herein has the potential applicability to decomposition any multivariate mixture distribution into a number of unimodal distributions when an appropriate distribution function to the data set is employed.

Indirect synthesis of multidegree-of-freedom transient systems

The indirect synthesis method is developed and shown to be capable of leading a near-optimal design of multidegree-of-freedom and multidesign-element transient nonlinear dynamical systems. The basis of the approach is to select the open design parameters such that the response of the portion of the system being designed approximates the limiting performances solution. The limiting performance problem can be formulated as one of linear programming by replacing all portions of the system subject to transient disturbances by control forces and supposing that the remaining portions are linear as are the overall kinematic constraints. One then selects the design parameters that respond most closely to the limiting performance solution, which can be achieved by unconstrained curve-fitting techniques.

The Use of General Purpose Computer Programs to Derive Equations of Motion for Optimal Isolation Studies

Techniques were developed that utilize general purpose structural analysis computer programs to generate the equations of motion necessary for limiting performance studies. The methodology necessary to couple available general purpose finite element structural programs to a limiting performance capability was developed. Primary emphasis was given to the use of the general purpose program to develop equations of motion in a form that can be used by the limiting performance program.

Indirect synthesis of multi-degree of freedom transient systems

An indirect synthesis method is used in the efficient optimal design of multi-degree of freedom, multi-design element, nonlinear, transient systems. A limiting performance analysis which requires linear programming for a kinematically linear system is presented. The system is selected using system identification methods such that the designed system responds as closely as possible to the limiting performance. The efficiency is a result of the method avoiding the repetitive systems analyses accompanying other numerical optimization methods.
