Search for e + e − → K + K − ψ ( 3770 ) at center-of-mass energies from 4.84 to 4.95 GeV

Using e + e − collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 892 pb − 1 collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.84 to 4.95 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the process e + e − → K + K − ψ ( 3770 ) by reconstructing two charged kaons and one D meson from ψ ( 3770 ) . No significant signal of e + e − → K + K − ψ ( 3770 ) is found and the upper limits of the Born cross sections are reported at 90% confidence level. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Orbital Ingredients and Persistent Dirac Surface State for the Topological Band Structure in FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45

FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 (FTS) occupies a special spot in modern condensed matter physics at the intersections of electron correlation, topology, and unconventional superconductivity. The bulk electronic structure of FTS is predicted to be topologically nontrivial due to the band inversion between the d x z and p z bands along Γ − Z . However, there remain debates in both the authenticity of the Dirac surface states (DSSs) and the experimental deviations of band structure from the theoretical band inversion picture. Here we resolve these debates through a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy investigation. We first observe a persistent DSS independent of k z . Then, by comparing FTS with FeSe, which has no band inversion along Γ − Z , we identify the spectral weight fingerprint of both the presence of the p z band and the inversion between the d x z and p z bands. Furthermore, we propose a renormalization scheme for the band structure under the framework of a tight-binding model preserving crystal symmetry. Our results highlight the significant influence of correlation on modifying the band structure and make a strong case for the existence of topological band structure in this unconventional superconductor. Cross section measurement of e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) and search for e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 )

The energy-dependent cross section for e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) is measured at 18 center of mass energies from 4.288 to 4.951 GeV using the BESIII detector. Using the same data samples, we also perform the first search for the reaction e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 ) , but no evidence is found for the X ˜ ( 3872 ) in the π + π − J / ψ mass distribution. At each of the 18 center of mass energies, upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the cross section for e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) and on the product of the e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 ) cross section with the branching fraction of X ˜ ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ are reported. First measurements of the absolute branching fraction of Λ c ( 2625 ) + → Λ c + π + π − and upper limit on Λ c ( 2595 ) + → Λ c + π + π −

The absolute branching fraction of the decay Λ c ( 2625 ) + → Λ c + π + π − is measured for the first time to be ( 50.2 ± 5.7 stat ± 3.5 syst ) % with 368.48 pb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energies of s = 4.918 and 4.950 GeV. Although the central value of the result is lower than the theoretical prediction of 67%, obtained from isospin symmetry, they are consistent taking the uncertainties into account. This is the first absolute branching fraction measurement for Λ c ( 2625 ) + since it was found. This measurement is necessary to obtain the coupling constants for the transitions between s -wave and p -wave charmed baryons in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. In addition, we search for the decay Λ c ( 2595 ) + → Λ c + π + π − . No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on its branching fraction is determined to be 85.0% at the 90% confidence level. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

First Study of Antihyperon-Nucleon Scattering Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p and Measurement of Λ p → Λ p Cross Section

Using ( 10.087 ± 0.044 ) × 10 9 J / ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the processes Λ p → Λ p and Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p are studied, where the Λ / Λ ¯ baryons are produced in the process J / ψ → Λ Λ ¯ and the protons are the hydrogen nuclei in the cooling oil of the beam pipe. Clear signals are observed for the two reactions. The cross sections in − 0.9 ≤ cos θ Λ / Λ ¯ ≤ 0.9 are measured to be σ ( Λ p → Λ p ) = ( 12.2 ± 1.6 stat ± 1.1 syst ) and σ ( Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p ) = ( 17.5 ± 2.1 stat ± 1.6 syst ) mb at the Λ / Λ ¯ momentum of 1.074 GeV / c within a range of ± 0.017 GeV / c , where the θ Λ / Λ ¯ are the scattering angles of the Λ / Λ ¯ in the Λ p / Λ ¯ p rest frames. Furthermore, the differential cross sections of the two reactions are also measured, where there is a slight tendency of forward scattering for Λ p → Λ p , and a strong forward peak for Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p . We present an approach to extract the total elastic cross sections by extrapolation. The study of Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p represents the first study of antihyperon-nucleon scattering, and these new measurements will serve as important inputs for the theoretical understanding of the (anti)hyperon-nucleon interaction. Search for the production of deuterons and antideuterons in e + e − annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 4.13 and 4.70 GeV

Using a data sample of e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19 fb − 1 collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the production of deuterons and antideuterons via e + e − → p p π − d ¯ + c . c . for the first time at center-of-mass energies between 4.13 and 4.70 GeV. No significant signal is observed and the upper limit of the e + e − → p p π − d ¯ + c . c . cross section is determined to be from 9.0 to 145 fb depending on the center-of-mass energy at the 90% confidence level. Measurement of e + e − → η J / ψ cross section from s = 3.808 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 22.42 fb − 1 collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the cross sections of the e + e − → η J / ψ process at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. Three structures are observed in the line shape of the measured cross sections. A maximum-likelihood fit with ψ ( 4040 ) , two additional resonances, and a nonresonant component are performed. The mass and width of the first additional state are ( 4219.7 ± 2.5 ± 4.5 ) MeV / c 2 and ( 80.7 ± 4.4 ± 1.4 ) MeV , respectively, consistent with the ψ ( 4230 ) . For the second state, the mass and width are ( 4386 ± 13 ± 17 ) MeV / c 2 and ( 177 ± 32 ± 13 ) MeV , respectively, consistent with the ψ ( 4360 ) . The first uncertainties are statistical, and the second ones are systematic. The statistical significance of ψ ( 4040 ) is 8.0 σ and those for ψ ( 4230 ) and ψ ( 4360 ) are more than 10.0 σ . Evidence of the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay Λ c + → p π 0

Evidence for the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay Λ c + → p π 0 is reported for the first time with a statistical significance of 3.7 σ based on 6.0 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.843 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The absolute branching fraction of Λ c + → p π 0 is measured to be ( 1.5 6 − 0.58 + 0.72 ± 0.20 ) × 10 − 4 . Combining with the branching fraction of Λ c + → n π + , ( 6.6 ± 1.3 ) × 10 − 4 , the ratio of the branching fractions of Λ c + → n π + and Λ c + → p π 0 is calculated to be 3.2 − 1.2 + 2.2 . As an important input for the theoretical models describing the decay mechanisms of charmed baryons, our result indicates that the nonfactorizable contributions play an essential role and their interference with the factorizable contributions should not be significant. In addition, the absolute branching fraction of Λ c + → p η is measured to be ( 1.63 ± 0.3 1 stat ± 0.1 1 syst ) × 10 − 3 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

M31N 2008-12a-The Remarkable Recurrent Nova in M31-Panchromatic Observations of the 2015 Eruption

The Andromeda Galaxy recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a had been observed in eruption 10 times, including yearly eruptions from 2008 to 2014. With a measured recurrence period of Prec = 351+/-13 days (we believe the true value to be half of this) and a white dwarf very close to the Chandrasekhar limit, M31N 2008-12a has become the leading pre-explosion supernova type Ia progenitor candidate. Following multi-wavelength follow-up observations of the 2013 and 2014 eruptions, we initiated a campaign to ensure early detection of the predicted 2015 eruption, which triggered ambitious ground- and space-based follow-up programs. In this paper we present the 2015 detection, visible to near-infrared photometry and visible spectroscopy, and ultraviolet and X-ray observations from the Swift observatory. The LCOGT 2 m (Hawaii) discovered the 2015 eruption, estimated to have commenced at August 28.28 +/- 0.12 UT. The 2013-2015 eruptions are remarkably similar at all wavelengths. New early spectroscopic observations reveal short-lived emission from material with velocities approx. 13,000 km/s, possibly collimated outflows. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eruption provide strong evidence supporting a red giant donor. An apparently stochastic variability during the early supersoft X-ray phase was comparable in amplitude and duration to past eruptions, but the 2013 and 2015 eruptions show evidence of a brief flux dip during this phase. The multi-eruption Swift/XRT spectra show tentative evidence of high-ionization emission lines above a high-temperature continuum. Following Henze et al. (2015a), the updated recurrence period based on all known eruptions is Prec 174 +/- 10 days, and we expect the next eruption of M31N 2008-12a to occur around 2016 mid-September.

A Micromachined Geometric Moire Interferometric Floating-Element Shear Stress Sensor

This paper presents the development of a floating-element shear stress sensor that permits the direct measurement of skin friction based on geometric Moir interferometry. The sensor was fabricated using an aligned wafer-bond/thin-back process producing optical gratings on the backside of a floating element and on the top surface of the support wafer. Experimental characterization indicates a static sensitivity of 0.26 microns/Pa, a resonant frequency of 1.7 kHz, and a noise floor of 6.2 mPa/(square root)Hz.

A Computationally Efficient Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Method for Axisymmetric Problems

The Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is one of the recently developed element-free methods. The method is convenient and can produce accurate results with continuous secondary variables, but is more computationally expensive than the finite element method. To overcome this disadvantage, a simple Heaviside test function is chosen. The computational effort is significantly reduced by eliminating the domain integral for the axisymmetric potential problems and by simplifying the domain integral for the axisymmetric elasticity problems. The method is evaluated through several patch tests for axisymmetric problems and example problems for which the exact solutions are available. The present method yielded very accurate solutions. The sensitivity of several parameters of the method is also studied.

Coupling Finite Element and Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Methods for Two-Dimensional Potential Problems

A coupled finite element (FE) method and meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method for analyzing two-dimensional potential problems is presented in this paper. The analysis domain is subdivided into two regions, a finite element (FE) region and a meshless (MM) region. A single weighted residual form is written for the entire domain. Independent trial and test functions are assumed in the FE and MM regions. A transition region is created between the two regions. The transition region blends the trial and test functions of the FE and MM regions. The trial function blending is achieved using a technique similar to the 'Coons patch' method that is widely used in computer-aided geometric design. The test function blending is achieved by using either FE or MM test functions on the nodes in the transition element. The technique was evaluated by applying the coupled method to two potential problems governed by the Poisson equation. The coupled method passed all the patch test problems and gave accurate solutions for the problems studied.

Meshless Petrov-Galerkin Method Applied to Axisymmetric Problems

An axisymmetric Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) algorithm is presented for the potential and elasticity problems. In this algorithm the trial and test functions are chosen from different spaces. By a judicious choice of these functions, the integrals involved in the weak form can be restricted to a local neighborhood. This makes the method truly meshless. The MLPG algorithm is used to study various potential and elasticity problems for which exact solutions are available. The sensitivity and effectiveness of the MLPG algorithm to various parameters such as the weight functions, basis functions and support domain radius, etc. was studied. The MLPG algorithm yielded accurate solutions for all weight functions, basis functions and support domain radii considered for all of the problems studied.

Analysis and measurements of low frequency lightning component penetration through aerospace vehicle metal and graphite skins

An analysis of the shielding properties of mixed metal and graphite composite structures has illustrated some important aspects of electromagnetic field penetration into the interior. These include: (1) that graphite access doors on metallic structures will attenuate lightning magnetic fields very little; conversely, metal doors on a graphite structure will also attenuate fields from lightning strike currents very little, i.e., homogeneity of the shield is a critical factor in shielding and (2) that continuous conductors between two points inside a graphite skin such as an air data probe metallic tubing connection to an air data computer can allow large current penetrations into a vehicle interior. The true weight savings resulting from the use of composite materials can only be evaluated after the resulting electromagnetic problems such as current penetrations have been solved, and this generally requires weight addition in the form of cable shields, conductor bonding or external metallization.
