Tuning collective anion motion enables superionic conductivity in solid-state halide electrolytes

Halides of the family Li 3 MX 6 (M = Y, In, Sc and so on, X = halogen) are emerging solid electrolyte materials for all-solid-state Li-ion batteries. They show greater chemical stability and wider electrochemical stability windows than existing sulfide solid electrolytes, but have lower room-temperature ionic conductivities. Here, in this work, we report the discovery that the superionic transition in Li 3 YCl 6 is triggered by the collective motion of anions, as evidenced by synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Based on this finding, we used a rational design strategy to lower the transition temperature and thus improve the room-temperature ionic conductivity of this family of compounds. We accordingly synthesized Li 3 YCl x Br 6-x and Li 3 GdCl 3 Br 3 and achieved very high room-temperature conductivities of 6.1 and 11 mS cm -1 for Li 3 YCl 4.5 Br 1.5 and Li 3 GdCl 3 Br 3 , respectively. These findings open new routes to the design of room-temperature superionic conductors for high-performance solid batteries.

Low-cost iron trichloride cathode for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries

The dominant chemistries of lithium-ion batteries on the market today still rely on flammable organic liquid electrolytes and cathodes containing scarce metals, such as cobalt or nickel, raising safety, cost and environmental concerns. Here we show a FeCl 3 cathode that costs as little as 1% of the cost of a LiCoO 2 cathode or 2% of a LiFePO 4 cathode. Once coupled with a solid halide electrolyte and a lithium-indium (Li–In) alloy anode, it enables all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries without any liquid components. Notably, FeCl 3 exhibits two flat voltage plateaux between 3.5 and 3.8 V versus Li + /Li, and the solid cell retains 83% of its initial capacity after 1,000 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.95%. Combined neutron diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterizations reveal a Li-ion (de)intercalation mechanism together with a Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox process. Further, our work provides a promising avenue for developing sustainable battery technologies with a favourable balance of performance, cost and safety.

Physical origins of the varying performance and unusual transport behaviors among thermoelectric A Mg 2 Sb 2 materials ( A = Ca, Sr, Sm, Yb, and Mg)

Contrary to the similar thermoelectric performance among both AZn 2 Sb 2 and AMg 2 Bi 2 compounds, their isostructural counterparts, AMg 2 Sb 2 , can exhibit thermoelectric figure of merit values that vary by orders of magnitude with different A elements. Here, we reveal physical origins accounting for the significantly differing performance among AMg 2 Sb 2 -based compounds (A = Ca, Sr, Sm, Yb, and Mg) through comprehensive analyses, where it is shown that the dispar- ities in performance at the macroscale essentially originate from the widely varying activation energies that equal amounts of dopant can induce. Meanwhile, a few unusual transport behaviors regarding electrical conductivity, carrier concentration, or lattice thermal con- ductivity among these compounds have been identified, and we also present their rationales in depth. Furthermore, this mechanism-focused study can not only promote further understanding of the complex transport behaviors in condensed matter but be instrumental in rationally tun- ing the physical properties of materials as well.

Bifunctional porous non-noble metal phosphide catalyst for overall water splitting and methods of making and using same

A method of electrocatalytic water splitting by providing an anode and a cathode; and utilizing the anode and the cathode for alkaline water electrolysis. Each of the anode and the cathode comprises a uniform distribution of a bifunctional electrocatalyst comprising metallic phosphides on a conductive substrate. The metallic phosphides comprise arion phosphide (FeP) and dinickel phosphide (Ni 2 P). The bifunctional electrocatalyst promotes hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode, and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode.

A scalable solid-state nanoporous network with atomic-level interaction design for carbon dioxide capture

Carbon capture and sequestration reduces carbon dioxide emissions and is critical in accomplishing carbon neutrality targets. Here, we demonstrate new sustainable, solid-state, polyamine-appended, cyanuric acid–stabilized melamine nanoporous networks (MNNs) via dynamic combinatorial chemistry (DCC) at the kilogram scale toward effective and high-capacity carbon dioxide capture. Polyamine-appended MNNs reaction mechanisms with carbon dioxide were elucidated with double-level DCC where two-dimensional heteronuclear chemical shift correlation nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed to demonstrate the interatomic interactions. We distinguished ammonium carbamate pairs and a mix of ammonium carbamate and carbamic acid during carbon dioxide chemisorption. The coordination of polyamine and cyanuric acid modification endows MNNs with high adsorption capacity (1.82 millimoles per gram at 1 bar), fast adsorption time (less than 1 minute), low price, and extraordinary stability to cycling by flue gas. This work creates a general industrialization method toward carbon dioxide capture via DCC atomic-level design strategies.

Design, dynamic modeling and wave basin verification of a Hybrid Wave–Current Energy Converter

Massive and high-density Marine and Hydrokinetic (MHK) energy is contained in the ocean, including waves, tidal streams, and ocean currents. Traditional MHK energy converters harvest energy from only a single MHK energy source, which does not fully exploit the energy potential that co-exists in multiple forms of MHK energy in the ocean. This paper presents the design and dynamics of a Hybrid Wave–Current Energy Converter (HWCEC) that can simultaneously convert both wave and current energy to electricity with a single Power Take-off (PTO) through the engagement and disengagement of the three one-way clutches. The critical design parameters are analyzed through modeling and simulation, including the transmission ratios, the electrical impedance, and the turbine-heave plate distance. Water basin tests in a wave–current tank were conducted, which shows the prototyped HWCEC can improve the electric power output by 38%–71% for regular waves and 79% for irregular waves, while providing a 70% reduction of the Peak to Average Ratio (PAR) of power compared to the baseline Wave Energy Converter (WEC). Here we further analyze the occurring percentages of the instant power of both WEC and HWCEC in irregular wave tests, shedding new insight on how HWCEC reduces the PAR.

Dynamic characterization and performance evaluation of a 10-kW power take-off with mechanical motion rectifier for wave energy conversion

The power take-off (PTO) is a key component for wave energy converters. In this paper, a compact PTO with mechanical motion rectification rated at 10 kW is designed and prototyped, and characterized. A piecewise nonlinear dynamic model is established to describe its unique dynamic property. A linear hydraulic actuator is adopted in lab testing to drive the prototype and the unknown parameters of the dynamic model are identified. Further verification shows that the model can predict the dynamic performance of the PTO well. The test results show that the mechanical motion rectifier-based PTO can achieve overall energy transfer efficiency as high as 65% in regular waves even when the generator is working below the rated electric load and speed. In the irregular wave test, the PTO achieved the overall energy transfer efficiency of 54%, and the peak-to-average ratio acquired during the test is 12.5.

Dynamic Characterization and Performance Evaluation of a 10-kw Power Take-Off with Mechanical Motion Rectifier for Wave Energy Conversion

The power take-off (PTO) is a key component for wave energy converters (WECs). The dynamic properties of the PTO influence the response of the WEC and should be considered when designing the WEC and not oversimplified. In addition, the efficiency as well as the reliability can play an important role on whether the PTO can be suitable for real-world applications. In this paper, a novel compact PTO rated at 10 kW is designed and prototyped, and a comprehensive nonlinear dynamic model is established for the PTO. Through bench testing, the unknown parameters of the dynamic model are characterized and determined. Further verification shows that the model can predict the dynamic performance of the PTO well. In addition, the test results show that the mechanical motion rectifier PTO can achieve good energy transfer efficiency, especially for low-load and low-speed conditions.
