Magnetostrictive actuators based on TbDy alloys show promise for use as actuators on cryogenic devices. They can be made to deliver large forces and useful displacements below liquid nitrogen temperatures, with many advantages over piezoelectric actuators or motion feedthroughs from higher temperature actuators.
An optical test Dewar is being constructed with the unique capability to test mirrors of diameter less than or equal to 1 m, f less than or equal to 6, at temperatures from 300 to 4.2 K with a ZYGO Mark IV interferometer. The design and performance of this facility will be presented.
