Glovebox - an Excellent Environment for Microgravity Experiments

The use of the Spacelab Glovebox on the recent First United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) mission and the success with which the facility accommodated a large number of microgravity experiments are discussed. Sixteen Materials Science experiments were developed and successfully operated during the first microgravity usage of this new glovebox in space. This facility has a closed working volume to safely contain loose particles and droplets that may be inadvertently freed in setting up or conducting the experiments. The facility also offers an excellent photographic laboratory for observing and recording science data. The USML-1 Spacelab Globebox was a highly successful project that provided the motivation to begin the development of an Orbiter Middeck Glovebox and also provided valuable experience in setting the requirements for the Space Station Freedom Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG).

Low-g measurements by NASA

NASA has utilized low-g accelerometers on a variety of flights for over ten years. These flights have included aircraft parabolas, suborbital trajectories, and orbital missions. This large quantity of data has undergone only limited in-depth analyses. Highlights of this low-g data are presented along with brief discussion of the instruments used and the circumstances of the data collection.

Low-gravity materials experiments in the Space Station Freedom

The science and hardware programs laying the science and technology framework for experiments to be conducted aboard SSF are described. Six microgravity facilities planned for the Laboratory Module encompass the Fluid Physics/Dynamics Facility, investigating fundamental fluid behavior; the Advanced Protein Crystal Growth Facility, growing high-quality crystals for pharmaceutical, medical, chemical, and biotechnology applications; the Biotechnology Facility, investigating microgravity effects on biological processes and living organisms at the cellular level and on the purification and production of biological materials; the Space Station Furnace Facility, conducting metal and alloy solidification experiments; the Modular Containerless Processing Facility, supporting experiments through levitation techniques; and the Modular Combustion Facility, performing studies of fundumental combustion processes.

Low-g measurements by NASA

Low-g accelerometers were used by NASA on a variety of flights for over 12 years. These flights have included aircraft parabolas, suborbital trajectories, and orbital missions. This large quantity of data has undergone only limited in-depth analyses. Examples of data in many forms and results of analyses such as power spectral densities and shock spectra are given for a wide variety of missions. Accelerometers used to acquire the data are also identified.
