Auto- and hetero-associative memory using a 2-D optical logic gate

An optical associative memory system suitable for both auto- and hetero-associative recall is demonstrated. This system utilizes Hamming distance as the similarity measure between a binary input and a memory image with the aid of a two-dimensional optical EXCLUSIVE OR (XOR) gate and a parallel electronics comparator module. Based on the Hamming distance measurement, this optical associative memory performs a nearest neighbor search and the result is displayed in the output plane in real-time. This optical associative memory is fast and noniterative and produces no output spurious states as compared with that of the Hopfield neural network model.

Hybrid vision for automated spacecraft landing

A hyrbid real-time vision system concept is proposed for Mars lander guidance and control for the Mars Rover/Sample Return mission. The system includes digital and optical processing methods with high speed digital image warping to preprocess a video image for optical correlation. The system also includes position estimation by synthetic estimation filtering, image stabilization by joint transform optical correlation, and hazard identification from measurements of optical flow by sequential image subtraction.

Liquid-Crystal-Television Image Subtracters

Two image-subtraction systems from output images that show differences between input images of two objects. First: differences appear as bright regions in otherwise dark output image. Second: differences and similarities shown by colors. All parts of two images processed simultaneously by optical components only; digital electronic processing of data not required. Concept offers potential for rapid, inexpensive comparison of images in such applications as automatic inspection, medical diagnosis, and robotic vision.

Optical Recognition And Tracking Of Objects

Separate objects moving independently tracked simultaneously. System uses coherent optical techniques to obtain correlation between each object and reference image. Moving objects monitored by charge-coupled-device television camera, output fed to liquid-crystal television (LCTV) display. Acting as spatial light modulator, LCTV impresses images of moving objects on collimated laser beam. Beam spatially low-pass filtered to remove high-spatial-frequency television grid pattern.

Optical Image Subtraction

Report reviews optical image subtraction techniques developed during years 1975 through 1985. Useful in such disciplines as studies of earth resources, meteorology, automatic surveillance, pattern recognition, studies of urban growth, and compression of bandwidth in communication systems. Describes following real-time techniques: source encoding, polarization modulation, pseudocolor image-difference detection, holographic-shear-lens technique, and nonlinear electro-optics. Reported non-real-time image-subtraction techniques are following, all of which involve intensity subtraction: speckle-diffuser encoding, speckle-pattern encoding, halftone-screen encoding, and polarization-shifted carrier encoding. Offers an attractive alternative to digital electronic image subtraction, is faster and treats all parts of images simultaneously.

Optical pseudocolor image enhancement with real-time large screen display

A real-time broadband pseudocolor image enhancement technique using a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator (LCTV SLM) is described. Three different schemes to modulate the gray-scale disribution of an input scene by an LCTV SLM through varying the orientations of its analyzer are presented. These schemes are incorporated into a compact white light optical projection system that is able to display, on a large screen, broadband pseudocolor images of real-world input scenes. Experimental results demonstrating the feasibility of the technique are reported.

Real-time image difference detection using a polarization rotation spacial light modulator

An image difference detection system is described, of the type wherein two created image representations such as transparencies representing the images to be compared lie coplanar, while light passes through the two transparencies and is formed into coincident images at the image plane for comparison. The two transparencies are formed by portions of a polarization-rotation spatial light modulator display such as a multi-pixel liquid crystal display or a magnetooptical rotation type display. In a system where light passing through the two transparencies is polarized in transverse directions to enable the use of a Wollaston prism to bring the images into coincidence, a liquid crystal display can be used which is devoid of polarizing sheets that would interfere with transverse polarizing of the light passing through the two transparencies.

Real-time optical multiple object recognition and tracking system and method

The invention relates to an apparatus and associated methods for the optical recognition and tracking of multiple objects in real time. Multiple point spatial filters are employed that pre-define the objects to be recognized at run-time. The system takes the basic technology of a Vander Lugt filter and adds a hololens. The technique replaces time, space and cost-intensive digital techniques. In place of multiple objects, the system can also recognize multiple orientations of a single object. This later capability has potential for space applications where space and weight are at a premium.

Spatial light modulation by beam coupling in GaAs crystals

The first demonstration of spatial light modulation in GaAs using the photorefractive effect is reported. A special configuration was employed in which polarization rotation created by beam coupling was utilized. The ability to obtain these results despite a small coupling gain coefficient demonstrates the usefulness of the polarization technique presented here for optical processing with GaAs crystals.

Achromatic optical correlator for white light pattern recognition

An achromatic optical correlator using spatially multiplexed achromatic matched spatial filters (MSFs) for white light optical pattern recognition is presented. The MSF array is synthesizd using a monochromatic laser and its achromaticity is achieved by adjusting the scale and spatial carrier frequency of each MSF to accommodate the wavelength variations in white light correlation detections. Systems analysis and several experimental results showing the correlation peak intensity using white-light illumination are presented.

Optical image subtraction techniques, 1975-1985

Real- and nonreal-time optical image subtraction (OIS) techniques are reviewed. Real-time OIS techniques include source encoding, polarization modulation, pseudocolor image difference detection, the holographic shear lens technique, and nonlinear optics. Included in the nonreal-time category are speckle diffuser encoding, speckle-pattern encoding, halftone screen encoding, and polarization-shifted encoding. It is concluded that the most useful techniques are the real-time operations. It is noted that some nonreal-time optical techniques can be applied directly while others may be converted into real-time ones through the use of advance real-time spatial light modulators or electrooptic devices.

Real-time optical multiple-object recognition and tracking demonstration: A friendly challenge to the digital field

Researchers demonstrated the first optical multiple object tracking system. The system is capable of simultaneous tracking of multiple objects, each with independent movements in real-time, limited only to the TV frame rate (30 msec). In order to perform a similar tracking operation, a large computer system and very complex software would be needed. Although researchers have demonstrated the tracking of only 3 objects, the system capacity can easily be expanded by 2 orders of magnitude.
