Optoelectronic associative memory

An associative optical memory including an input spatial light modulator (SLM) in the form of an edge enhanced liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) and a pair of memory SLM's in the form of liquid crystal televisions (LCTV's) forms a matrix array of an input image which is cross correlated with a matrix array of stored images. The correlation product is detected and nonlinearly amplified to illuminate a replica of the stored image array to select the stored image correlating with the input image. The LCLV is edge enhanced by reducing the bias frequency and voltage and rotating its orientation. The edge enhancement and nonlinearity of the photodetection improves the orthogonality of the stored image. The illumination of the replicate stored image provides a clean stored image, uncontaminated by the image comparison process.

Opto-electronic morphological processor

The opto-electronic morphological processor of the present invention is capable of receiving optical inputs and emitting optical outputs. The use of optics allows implementation of parallel input/output, thereby overcoming a major bottleneck in prior art image processing systems. The processor consists of three components, namely, detectors, morphological operators and modulators. The detectors and operators are fabricated on a silicon VLSI chip and implement the optical input and morphological operations. A layer of ferro-electric liquid crystals is integrated with a silicon chip to provide the optical modulation. The implementation of the image processing operators in electronics leads to a wide range of applications and the use of optical connections allows cascadability of these parallel opto-electronic image processing components and high speed operation. Such an opto-electronic morphological processor may be used as the pre-processing stage in an image recognition system. In one example disclosed herein, the optical input/optical output morphological processor of the invention is interfaced with a binary phase-only correlator to produce an image recognition system.

An improved AOTF-based imaging spectrometer that offers several advantages over prior art AOTF imaging spectrometers is presented. The ability to electronically set the bandpass wavelength provides observational flexibility. Various improvements in optical architecture provide simplified magnification variability, improved image resolution and light throughput efficiency and reduced sensitivity to ambient light. Two embodiments of the invention are: (1) operation in the visible/near-infrared domain of wavelength range 0.48 to 0.76 microns; and (2) infrared configuration which operates in the wavelength range of 1.2 to 2.5 microns.

Optical implementation of a feature-based neural network with application to automatic target recognition

An optical neural network based on the neocognitron paradigm is introduced. A novel aspect of the architecture design is shift-invariant multichannel Fourier optical correlation within each processing layer. Multilayer processing is achieved by feeding back the ouput of the feature correlator interatively to the input spatial light modulator and by updating the Fourier filters. By training the neural net with characteristic features extracted from the target images, successful pattern recognition with intraclass fault tolerance and interclass discrimination is achieved. A detailed system description is provided. Experimental demonstrations of a two-layer neural network for space-object discrimination is also presented.

Dynamically reconfigurable optical morphological processor and its applications

An innovative optically implemented morphological processor is introduced. With the use of a large space-bandwidth-product Dammann grating and a high-speed shutter spatial light modulator, effective structuring element with large size and arbitrary shape can be constructed with dynamic reconfigurability. This reconfigurability is a major improvement over the conventional correlator-based morphological processor in which fixed holographic filters are used as structuring elements (Casasent and Botha, 1988). A novel two-dimensional thresholding photodetector array, capable of performing parallel thresholding and feedback, is utilized in this system and makes possible the implementation of many complex morphological operations requiring iterative feedbacks and full programmability. The optical architecture and the principle of operation are presented. Experimental demonstration of binary image morphological erosion, dilation, opening, and closing are also demonstrated. A technique for extending this technique to gray-scale image using thresholding decomposition technique is also discussed.

Filter function essentially coded hologram computed by Burchhardt's method, in which complex value of each pixel of fast Fourier transform of image represented by three real, nonnegative numbers. In generating optical correlator according to method, phasor of each pixel in Fourier transform represented by intensities in three adjacent pixels.

Auto and hetero-associative memory using a 2-D optical logic gate

An optical system for auto-associative and hetero-associative recall utilizing Hamming distance as the similarity measure between a binary input image vector V(sup k) and a binary image vector V(sup m) in a first memory array using an optical Exclusive-OR gate for multiplication of each of a plurality of different binary image vectors in memory by the input image vector. After integrating the light of each product V(sup k) x V(sup m), a shortest Hamming distance detection electronics module determines which product has the lowest light intensity and emits a signal that activates a light emitting diode to illuminate a corresponding image vector in a second memory array for display. That corresponding image vector is identical to the memory image vector V(sup m) in the first memory array for auto-associative recall or related to it, such as by name, for hetero-associative recall.

"Instant" photographic film based on semisynthetic retinal pigment bacteriorhodopsin proposed for optical processing of synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) signals. Input image recorded on film by laser operating at writing wavelength of bacteriorhodopsin, and output image recorded on computer by standard frame-grabber. Because it requires no chemical development, enables processing in nearly real time. Fast response and high resolution well suited for application. Film reusable, with concomitant reduction in cost of SAR processing.

JPL activities on development of acousto-optic tunable filter imaging spectrometer

Recent activities of JPL in the development of a new type of imaging spectrometers for earth observation and planetary exploration are reported. This instrument uses the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) as high resolution and fast programmable bandpass filter. AOTF operates in the principle of acousto-optic interaction in an anisotropic medium. This filter can be tuned in sequential, random, and multiwavelength access modes, providing observational flexibility. The diffraction process in the filter generates two diffracted monochromatic beams with polarization orthogonal to each other, creating a unique capability to measure both polarimetric and spectral properties of the incoming light simultaneously with a single instrument. The device gives wide wavelength operations with reasonably large throughput. In addition, it is in a compact solid-state structure without moving parts, providing system reliability. These attractive features give promising opportunities to develop a new generation of airborne/spaceborne and ground, real-time, imaging spectrometer systems for remote sensing applications.

Novelty filtered optical correlator using photorefractive crystal

We demonstrate a new optical correlator in which the correlation peak intensity is increased when the matched input object is moving. The basic configuration of the correlator is the same as a VanderLugt optical correlator consisting of a photorefractive crystal. The principal of this new correlator is based on the dynamic grating erasure property of photorefractive materials. The detail of this principle is described.
