Battery state monitoring using ultrasonic guided waves

A method of battery state monitoring includes: (1) providing a battery cell and at least one ultrasonic actuator and at least one ultrasonic sensor mounted to the battery cell; (2) using the ultrasonic actuator, generating a guided wave that propagates in-plane of the battery cell; (3) using the ultrasonic sensor, receiving an arriving wave corresponding to the guided wave; and (4) determining a state of the battery cell based on the arriving wave.

A systematic approach to resolve high impedance of multifunctional energy storage composites

Previous work has proposed and characterized the structural and electrical performance of Multifunctional Energy Storage Composite (MESC) structures: structural elements with embedded lithium-ion batteries which were developed by the Structures and Composite Laboratory (SACL) at Stanford University. This work conducts a comprehensive parametric study over the design variables in the manufacturing process to determine the root cause of increased DC impedance compared to commercial pouch cell batteries. Several MESC samples were assembled under various controlled environmental temperatures and pressures. The samples underwent Hybrid Peak Pulse Characterization (HPPC) to approximate the DC impedance as a function of state of charge (SOC). Failure limits of the battery with respect to assembly temperature and pressure were tested, and an MESC manufacturing simulation model was constructed in Abaqus to validate the manufacturing limits. Samples assembled without enough temperature or pressure failed due to a lack of structural integrity or hermetic seal. Conversely, samples which underwent elevated temperatures and pressures resulted in high DC impedance due to nonuniform electrolyte wetting. This work resolves the primary concern of MESC by achieving comparable DC impedance to commercial pouch cells of the same chemistry and testing procedure.

Numerical and experimental evaluation of mechanical performance of the multifunctional energy storage composites

This work presents numerical simulation methods to model the mechanical behavior of the multifunctional energy storage composites (MESCs), which consist of a stack of multiple thin battery layers reinforced with through-the-hole polymer rivets and embedded inside carbon fiber composite laminates. MESC has been demonstrated through earlier experiments on its exceptional behavior as a structural element as well as a battery. However, the inherent complex infrastructure of the MESC design has created significant challenges in simulation and modeling. A novel homogenization technique was adopted to characterize the multi-layer properties of battery material using physics-based constitutive equations combined with nonlinear deformation theories to handle the interface between the battery layers. Second, mechanical damage and failure modes among battery materials, polymer reinforcements, and carbon fiber-polymer interfaces were characterized through appropriate models and experiments. The model of MESCs has been implemented in a commercial finite element code in ABAQUS. A comparison of structural response and failure modes from numerical simulations and experimental tests are presented. The results of the study showed that the predictions of elastic and damage responses of MESCs at various loading conditions agreed well with the experimental data. © 2021

Accelerated Aging Experiments for Prognostics of Damage Growth in Composite Materials

Composite structures are gaining importance for use in the aerospace industry. Compared to metallic structures their behavior is less well understood. This lack of understanding may pose constraints on their use. One possible way to deal with some of the risks associated with potential failure is to perform in-situ monitoring to detect precursors of failures. Prognostic algorithms can be used to predict impending failures. They require large amounts of training data to build and tune damage model for making useful predictions. One of the key aspects is to get confirmatory feedback from data as damage progresses. These kinds of data are rarely available from actual systems. The next possible resource to collect such data is an accelerated aging platform. To that end this paper describes a fatigue cycling experiment with the goal to stress carbon-carbon composite coupons with various layups. Piezoelectric disc sensors were used to periodically interrogate the system. Analysis showed distinct differences in the signatures of growing failures between data collected at conditions. Periodic X-radiographs were taken to assess the damage ground truth. Results after signal processing showed clear trends of damage growth that were correlated to damage assessed from the X-ray images.

Modeling of failure and response to laminated composites subjected to in-plane loads

An analytical model was developed for predicting the response of laminated composites with or without a cutout and subjected to in-plane tensile and shear loads. Material damage resulting from the loads in terms of matrix cracking, fiber-matrix shearing, and fiber breakage was considered in the model. Delamination, an out-of-plane failure mode, was excluded from the model.

Transient dynamic analysis of laminated composite plates subjected to transverse impact

The dynamic response of a composite laminate plate to transverse impact loading is simulated numerically. An FEM scheme based on an eight-point brick element and three-dimensional linear elasticity theory is employed, assuming that the laminate layers are homogeneous and orthotropic. The derivation of the model is given in detail; the numerical implementation is briefly outlined; and results for the impact of 0.5-inch-diameter Al spheres at 500, 1000, and 1500 inch/sec on clamped or simply supported 3 x 3-inch plates made of T300/934 graphite/epoxy prepreg with ply orientation (0/-45/45/90)2S are presented in extensive graphs. The model is shown to provide accurate information on the histories of impactor-plate contact force; impactor displacement and velocity; and displacement, velocity, strain, and stress throughout the plate.
