Peristaltic Pump With a Stable Output

Proposed design for peristaltic pump decreases flow-rate change that results from loss of elasticity. Instead of tubing, new pump uses special flexible liner as pumping channel. Liner molded as single piece of flexible plastic with helical internal channels. Three rollers move around inner wall of liner, compressing channels and forcing liquid before constrictions. As rollers move on, channels open elastically, drawing in liquid from inlet port and making it available when rollers return.

Linear motion valve

The linear motion valve is described. The valve spool employs magnetically permeable rings, spaced apart axially, which engage a sealing assembly having magnetically permeable pole pieces in magnetic relationship with a magnet. The gap between the ring and the pole pieces is sealed with a ferrofluid. Depletion of the ferrofluid is minimized.

Remotely-Controlled Docking System

Spring-loaded drogue cones tolerate and correct misalinement. Attachment Mechanism equipped with spring-loaded latches, shock-absorbing springs, and self-alining conical mating surfaces. Docking system includes three attachment mechanisms plus television camera that views set of crosshairs for alinement of vehicle and payload. Originally developed for Space Shuttle, mechanism adapted for robot manipulator arms, trailer hitches, and docking devices for in-flight refueling of airplanes.

Apparatus for releasably connecting first and second objects in predetermined space relationship

A releasable apparatus that connects first and second space objects, such as a spacecraft and a space vehicle, in predetermined spaced relationship is described. The apparatus comprises at least one probe member mounted on the first object, having an elongated shank portion, the distal end of which is provided with a tapered nose portion. At least one drogue assembly is mounted on the second space object for releasably capturing the probe member upon the first and second objects being brought into close proximity with each other.

Ferrofluid Would Seal Linear-Motion Valve

Proposed valve employs ferrofluid to make tight seal. Seal requires no precisely machined parts, and hand lapping of valve seats are unnecessary. Magnetic fluid fills gap between shaft and annular pole piece in chamber wall. Precise shaft fit is not necessary.

Tapped-Hole Vent Path

Long helical vent path cools and releases hot pyrotechnical gas that exits along its spiraling threads. Current design uses 1/4-28 threads with outer diameter of stud reduced by 0.025 in. (0.62 mm). To open or close gassampler bottle, pyrotechnic charges on either one side or other of valve cylinder are actuated. Gases vented slowly over long path are cool enough to present no ignition hazard. Vent used to meter flow in refrigeration, pneumaticcontrol, and fluid-control systems by appropriately adjusting size and length of vent path.

Magnetic-Gear Concept for Special Applications

Proposed gear has magnetic instead of mechanical teeth. Magnetic gears consists of permanent magnets resembling mechanical gears but with smooth faces and alternating magnetic poles in place of mechanical teeth. Low torque, noncontacting gears useful in special environments.

Pipe-Thread Vacuum Seal

Lead/tin solder coating on pipe threads serves as seal in non-critical vacuum systems. Pipe-thread seal is less expensive than weld or knife-edge flanges. Can also be used in place of sealing tape.

Improved control system power unit for large parachutes

Improved control system power unit drives the control surfaces of very large controllable parachutes. The design features subassemblies for determining control surface position and cable loading, and protection of the load sensor against the possibility of damage during manipulation.
