Simultaneous X-Ray and UV Spectroscopy of the Symbiotic HD 154791

Our program consisted of three observations of the symbiotic neutron stadred giant binary 4U 1700+24/HD154791. Using an earlier 2002 TOO observation made in response to a new transient X-ray outburst, we had previously discovered a redshifted O VII line and submitted a paper on this discovery to the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. In these new observations, we from analysis of the 2002 TOO observation of the symbiotic neutron-star binary 4U 1700+24, made in response to detection of a new transient outburst, we discovered a redshifted Oxygen VIII line (in collaboration with A. Tiengo of UVA), and submitted a paper on this result to A&A. Analysis of the three subsequent observations has found a number of other features also due to ionized oxygen, which we have found to vary as the source transits from outburst to quiescence. A paper describing these observations is being prepared for submission to the Astrophysical Journal, led by Co-I Duncan Galloway.

Accreting Neutron Stars as Astrophysical Laboratories

In the last year, we have made an extremely important breakthrough in establishing the relationship between thermonuclear burst oscillations in accreting neutron stars and the stellar spin. More broadly, we have continued t o make significant scientific progress in all four of the key focus areas identified in our original proposal: (1) the disk-magnetosphere interaction in neutron stars, (2) rapid variability in accreting neutron stars, (3) physics of accretion flows, and (4) fundamental properties of neutron stars. A list of all publications that have arising from this work since the start of our program is given.

Target of Opportunity Positioning of Transient X-Ray Pulsars

Our program successfully localized three newly-identified transient X-ray pulsars. XTE J1858+034 is a 221 s pulsar (Takeshima et al. 1998, IAUC 6826), XTE J1946+274 is a 15.8 s pulsar (Takeshima and Chakrabarty 1998, IAUC 7016), and XTE J0111.2-7317 is a 31 s pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud (Chakrabarty et al. 1998, IAUC 7048). This last pulsar was a particularly interesting source, and our XTE observations enabled prompt follow-up observations with the ASCA mission (Yokogawa et al. 2000, ApJ. 539, 191).

Simultaneous X-Ray/Ultraviolet Timing of 4U 1626-67

The science results from our observation have been published (Chakrabarty et al. 2001, ApJ, 562, 985). We detected large-amplitude 0.3- 1.2 mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from the low-mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1626--67, using ultraviolet photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based optical photometry. These 1 mHz QPOs, which have coherence (nu/Delta_nu) = 8, are entirely distinct from the 130 mHz pulsar spin frequency, a previously known 48 mHz QPO, and the 42 min binary period (independently confirmed here). Unlike the 48 mHz and 130 mHz oscillations which are present in both the optical/UV and the X-ray emission, the 1 mHz QPOs are not detected in simultaneous observations with the X-Ray Timing Explorer. The rms amplitude of the mHz QPO decreases from 15% in the far UV to 3% in the optical, while the upper limit on a corresponding X-ray QPO is as low as 0.8\%. We suggest that the mHz oscillations are due to warping of the inner accretion disk. We also report the detection of coherent upper and lower sidebands of the 130 mHz optical pulsations, with unequal amplitude and a spacing of 1.93 mHz around the main pulsation. The origin of these sidebands remains unclear.

Timing the Millisecond X-ray Pulsar with RXTE

The science from this program was published in a paper entitled 'The Erratic Luminosity Behavior of SAX J1808.4-3658 During Its 2000 Outburst'. This paper discussed the unusual outburst lightcurve of this source in early 2000, and contrasted its behavior with the more typical outburst lightcurves observed in other soft X-ray transients. After this grant had expired, some of the data products generated in this program were also mentioned in two more recent papers entitled 'Nuclear-Powered Millisecond Pulsars and the Maximum Spin Frequency of Neutron Stars' and 'Kilohertz Quasi-Periodic X-Ray Brightness Fluctuations from an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar'.

Orbital-Phase-Resolved Study of OAO 1657-415 in Spin-Up and Spin-Down

We observed the 38-s X-ray pulsar OAO 1657-415 in a series of daily snapshots spanning its 10-day binary orbit, on three different occasions corresponding to different accretion torque states. The goal was to see if the previously observed drastic variability in X-ray spectral properties showed a systematic pattern with respect to orbital phase or torque state. Our study failed to identify any systematic patterns, although considerably stochastic variability was observed. Overall, our results were inconclusive. We chose not to prepare a journal paper on this study, although the data were shared with several other groups interested in monitoring the properties of this source.

The Outbursts and Orbit of the Accreting Pulsar GS 1843 - 02 = 2S 1845 - 024

We present observations of a series of 10 outbursts of pulsed hard X-ray flux from the transient 10.6 mHz accreting pulsar GS 1843-02, using the Burst and Transient Source Experiment on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. These outbursts occurred regularly every 242 days, coincident with the ephemeris of the periodic transient GRO J1849-03, which has recently been identified with the SAS 3 source 2S 1845-024. Our pulsed detection provides the first clear identification of GS 1843-02 with 2S 1845-024. We present a pulse timing analysis that shows that the 2S 1845-024 outbursts occur near the periastron passage of the neutron star's highly eccentric (e = 0.88 +/- 0.01) 242.18 +/- 0.01 day period binary orbit about a high-mass (M(sub c) greater than 7 solar mass) companion. The orbit and transient outburst pattern strongly suggest that the pulsar is in a binary system with a Be star. Our observations show a long-term spin-up trend, with most of the spin-up occurring during the outbursts. From the measured spin-up rates and inferred luminosities we conclude that an accretion disk is present during the outbursts.

Discovery of the 198 Second X-Ray Pulsar GRO J2058+42

GRO J2058+42, a transient 198 s X-ray pulsar, was discovered by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) during a "giant" outburst in 1995 September-October. The total flux peaked at about 300 mcrab (20-50 keV) as measured by Earth occultation. The pulse period decreased from 198 to 196 s during the 46 day outburst. The pulse shape evolved over the course of the outburst and exhibited energy-dependent variations. BATSE observed five additional weak outbursts from GRO J2058 + 42, each with a 2 week duration and a peak-pulsed flux of about 15 mcrab (20-50 keV), that were spaced by about 110 days. An observation of the 1996 November outburst by the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) proportional counter array (PCA) localized the source to within a 4 s radius error circle (90% confidence) centered on R.A. = 20h 59m.0, decl. = 41 deg 43 s (J2000). Additional shorter outbursts with peak-pulsed fluxes of about 8 mcrab were detected by BATSE halfway between the first four 15 mcrab outbursts. The RXTE All-Sky Monitor detected all eight weak outbursts with approximately equal durations and intensities. GRO J2058 + 42 is most likely a Be/X-ray binary that appears to outburst at periastron and apastron, No optical counterpart has been identified to date, and no X-ray source was present in the error circle in archival ROSAT observations.

We present a pulse timing analysis which shows that the 2S 1845-024 outbursts occur near the periastron passage of a highly eccentric (e = 0.88 q 0.01) 242.18 +/- 0.01 day period binary orbit about a high mass (M(sub opt) > 7 solar mass companion. The orbit and transient outburst pattern suggest a Be star/X-ray pulsar system, however the optical companion is unknown. Our observations show a long-term spin-up trend, with most of the spin-up occurring during the outbursts. From the measured spin-up rates and inferred mass accretion rates we conclude that an accretion disk is present during the outbursts.

Observations of Accreting Pulsars

We summarize 5 years of continuous monitoring of accretion-powered pulsars with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Our 20-70 keV observations have determined or refined the orbital parameters of 13 binaries, discovered five new transient accreting pulsars, measured the pulsed flux history during outbursts of 12 transients (GRO J1744-28, 4U 0115+634, GRO J1750-27, GS 0834-430, 2S 1417-624, GRO J1948+32, EXO 2030+375, GRO J1008-57, A0535+26, GRO J2058+42, 4U 1145-619, and A1118-616), and also measured the accretion torque history during outbursts of six of those transients whose orbital param- eters were also known. We have also continuously measured the pulsed flux and spin frequency for eiaht persistently accreting pulsars (Her X-1, Cen X-3, Vela X-1, OAO 1657-415, GX 301-2, 4U 1626-67, 4U 1538-52, and GX 1+4). Because of their continuity and uniformity over a long baseline, BATSE observations have provided new insights into the long-term behavior of accreting magnetic neutron stars. We have found that all accreting pulsars show stochastic variations in their spin frequencies and luminosities, including those displaying secular spin-up or spin-down on long timescales, which blurs the con- ventional distinction between disk-fed and wind-fed binaries. Pulsed flux and accretion torque are strongly correlated in outbursts of transient accreting pulsars but are uncorrelated, or even anti- correlated, in persistent sources. We describe daily folded pulse profiles, frequency, and flux measurements that are available through the Compton Observatory Science Support Center at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center.

On the Dramatic Spin-up/Spin-Down Torque Reversals in Accreting Pulsars

Dramatic torque reversals between spin-up and spin-down have been observed in half of the persistent X-ray pulsars monitored by the Burst and Transient Space Experiment (BATSE) all-sky monitor on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Theoretical models developed to explain early pulsar timing data can explain spin-down torques via a disk-magnetosphere interaction if the star nearly corotates with the inner accretion disk. To produce the observed BATSE torque reversals, however, these equilibrium models require the disk to alternate between two mass accretion rates, with M+/- producing accretion torques of similar magnitude but always of opposite sign. Moreover, in at least one pulsar (GX 1+4) undergoing secular spin-down, the neutron star spins down faster during brief (approximately 20 day) hard X-ray flares-this is opposite the correlation expected from standard theory, assuming that BATSE pulsed flux increases with mass accretion rate. The 10 day to 10 yr intervals between torque reversals in these systems are much longer than any characteristic magnetic or viscous timescale near the inner disk boundary and are more suggestive of a global disk phenomenon. We discuss possible explanations of the observed torque behavior. Despite the preferred sense of rotation defined by the binary orbit, the BATSE observations are surprisingly consistent with an earlier suggestion for GX 1+4: the disks in these systems somehow alternate between episodes of prograde and retrograde rotation. We are unaware of any mechanism that could produce a stable retrograde disk in a binary undergoing Roche lobe overflow, but such flip-flop behavior does occur in numerical simulations of wind-fed systems. One possibility is that the disks in some of these binaries are fed by an X-ray-excited wind.

Rapid Spin-Up Episodes in the Wind-Fed Accreting Pulsar GX 301-2

The accreting pulsar GX 301-2 (P = 680 s) has been observed continuously by the large-area detectors of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory since 1991 April 5. Orbital parameters determined from these data are consistent with previous measurements, with improved accuracy in the current orbital epoch. The most striking features in the pulsar frequency history are two steady and rapid spin-up episodes, with a dot-nu approximately equal to (3_5) x 10(exp -12) Hz/s, each lasting for about 30 days. They probably represent the formation of transient accretion disks in this wind-fed pulsar. Except for these spin-up episodes, there are virtually no net changes in the neutron star spin frequency on long timescales. We suggest that the long-term spin-up trend observed since 1984 (dot-nu is approximately equals 2x10(exp -13) Hz/s) may be due entirely to brief (approximately 20 days) spin-up episodes similar to those we have discovered. We assess different accretion models and their ability to explain the orbital phase dependence of the observed flux. In addition to the previously observed preperiastron peak at orbital phase 0.956 +/- 0.022, we also find a smaller peak close to - at orbital phase 0.498 +/- 0.057. We show that if the companion star's effective temperature is less than 22,000 K, then it must have a mass M(sub c) < 70 solar mass and a radius R(sub c) < 85 solar radius so as not to overfill the tidal lobe at periastron. In order not to overflow the Roche lobe at periastron, the corresponding values are M(sub c) < 55 solar mass and R(sub c) < 68 solar radius. These constraints are nearly at odds with the reclassification of the companion as a B1 Ia + hypergiant.

A Sequence of Outbursts from the Transient X-Ray Pulsar GS 0834-430

GS 0834-430, a 12.3 s accretion-powered pulsar, has been observed in seven outbursts with the BATSE large-area detectors on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The first five outbursts observed by BATSE occurred at intervals of about 107 days, while the final two outbursts were separated by about 140 days. The photon energy spectrum, measured by Earth occultation in the 20 100 keV band, can be fitted by a power law with photon index alpha approximately equals -3.7 or by an exponential spectrum with temperature kT approximately equals 15 keV, with some variations within outbursts. The source has a low pulse fraction, less than or equal to 0.15 in the 20-50 keV band. We have observed significant temporal and energy-dependent variations in epoch folded pulse profiles. Because the intrinsic torque effects for this system are at least comparable to orbital effects, pulse timing analysis did not produce a unique orbital solution. However, confidence regions for the orbital elements yielded the following 1 sigma limits: orbital period P(sub orb) = 105.8 +/- 0.4 days and eccentricity 0.10 less than or approximately equals epsilon less than or approximately equals 0.17. GS 0834-430 is most likely a Be/X-ray binary.

Observations of accreting pulsars

We discuss recent observations of accreting binary pulsars with the all-sky BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. BATSE has detected and studied nearly half of the known accreting pulsar systems. Continuous timing studies over a two-year period have yielded accurate orbital parameters for 9 of these systems, as well as new insights into long-term accretion torque histories.

Discovery of the Orbit of the X-ray pulsar OAO 1657-415

Timing observations of the 38 s accreting X-ray pulsar OAO 1657-415 made with the BATSE large-area detectors on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory have revealed a binary orbit with an X-ray eclipse by the stellar companion. From the pulsar mass function fx(M) = 11.7 +/- 0.2 solar masses and the measured eclipse half-angle theta(e) = 29.7 +/- 1.3 deg, we infer that the stellar companion is a supergiant of spectral class B0-B6. If the companion can be identified and its orbital velocity measured, the neutron star mass can be constrained. Both intrinsic spin-up and spin-down of the pulsar were measured during our observation.
