Signal-Compensation-Based Adaptive PID Control for Fused Magnesia Smelting Processes

For fused magnesia smelting processes, the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is difficult to regulate the smelting currents within desired ranges due to unexpected variations of the dynamics caused by material feeding operations. To solve this problem, we first proposed its dynamic model composed of a linear model and an uncertain nonlinear dynamic system that describes the unknown time-varying dynamics of nonlinearity and strong couplings among controlled variables. Then, using the accurately calculated value of the uncertain part at the previous sampling time instant and the tracking error that reflects the influence of its change rate, we developed a feedforward and a one-step optimal control to obtain two signal compensators to eliminate the impact of frequent variations of the uncertainties. For the compensators, we proposed a weight selection method to minimize the sum of the squared tracking error with ensured closed-loop stability. Based on the abovementioned modeling and control structure, we finally developed a novel adaptive PID controller augmented with signal compensators to control the whole process. Industrial applications have shown that the proposed method can always keep the tracking error and the control input within their targeted ranges, leading to a significantly reduced energy consumption per ton and increased fused magnesia production.

Robust Online Sequential RVFLNs for Data Modeling of Dynamic Time-Varying Systems with Application of an Ironmaking Blast Furnace

In a world where the increasing complexity of modern industrial processes brings difficulties for accurate mathematical modeling, taking advantage of data has become an efficient solution to complex dynamic process modeling issue. In this paper, we develop a novel robust online sequential version of random vector functional-link networks (RVFLNs) for data-driven modeling of dynamic time-varying system and applied it in a blast furnace (BF) ironmaking process. First, to overcome the time-varying dynamics of process and to enable the RVFLNs to learn online with avoiding data saturation, an improved online sequential version of RVFLNs (OS-RFVLNs) is first presented by online sequential learning with forgetting factor. This improved OS-RVFLNs algorithm is not only suitable for the real-time and large data transfer situation, but also can adjust the sensitivity of the algorithm to different samples with the help of the introduced forgetting factor. Second, since the output weights of the improved OS-RVFLNs as well as other RVFLNs algorithms are obtained by the least squares approach, a robustness problem may occur when the training dataset is contaminated with various outliers. To solve this problem, a Cauchy distribution weighted M-estimator is introduced to improve the robustness of the improved OS- RVFLNs. For this proposed robust OS-RVFLNs (R-OS- RVFLNs), since the weights of different outlier data are properly determined by the Cauchy distribution function, their corresponding contribution on modeling can be properly distinguished. Thus robust and better modeling results can be achieved. Experiments using actual industrial data of BF ironmaking process and comparative studies have demonstrated that the proposed method produces a better estimation accuracy and stronger robustness than other methods.

A signal compensation based cascaded PI control for an industrial heat exchange system

Since the characteristics of the industrial heat exchange system (HES) are drastically affected by variations of the steam pressure, ambient temperature and water quality, it is difficult for the classical cascade PI control system to meet the desirable control objectives. Therefore, in this paper, a deterministic linear model with unmodeled dynamics is used to describe the dynamic characteristics of the HES. It should be noted that the unmodeled dynamics at the previously sampled instant can be calculated using actual measurements and that the tracking error, which includes effects of the rate of changes of unmodeled dynamics on the controlled model, can be accurately determined. An additional compensating signal is obtained with the feedforward control together with a one-step optimal control law. Consequently, the cascade PI control strategy with the signal compensation is established. Furthermore, the simulation and industrial application show that the proposed method can effectively improve the performance of the cascade PI control system, especially when the unmodeled dynamics is subjected to unknown variations.

Nonlinear Multiobjective MPC-Based Optimal Operation of a High Consistency Refining System in Papermaking

As one of the most important unit in the papermaking industry, the high consistency (HC) refining system is confronted with challenges such as improving pulp quality, energy saving, and emissions reduction in its operation processes. Here in this correspondence, an optimal operation of HC refining system is presented using nonlinear multiobjective model predictive control strategies that aim at set-point tracking objective of pulp quality, economic objective, and specific energy (SE) consumption objective, respectively. First, a set of input and output data at different times are employed to construct the subprocess model of the state process model for the HC refining system, and then the Wiener-type model can be obtained through combining the mechanism model of Canadian Standard Freeness and the state process model that determines their structures based on Akaike information criterion. Second, the multiobjective optimization strategy that optimizes both the set-point tracking objective of pulp quality and SE consumption is proposed simultaneously, which uses NSGA-II approach to obtain the Pareto optimal set. Furthermore, targeting at the set-point tracking objective of pulp quality, economic objective, and SE consumption objective, the sequential quadratic programming method is utilized to produce the optimal predictive controllers. In conclusion, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods can make the HC refining system provide a better performance of set-point tracking of pulp quality when these predictive controllers are employed. In addition, while the optimal predictive controllers orienting with comprehensive economic objective and SE consumption objective, it has been shown that they have significantly reduced the energy consumption.

Dynamic Performance Enhancement for Nonlinear Stochastic Systems Using RBF Driven Nonlinear Compensation with Extended Kalman Filter

In this paper, a novel hybrid control method is proposed to enhance the control performance of the PI based control system for a class of nonlinear and non-Gaussian stochastic dynamic processes with unmeasurable states. Firstly, to enhance the tracking performance of the PI controller where the PI parameters are fixed in many actual control systems, the compensative signal is formed using the extended Kalman filter(EKF) based state estimator and driven by the radial basis function (RBF) neural network based compensator. In addition, the weights of RBF is trained to minimize the entropy criterion of tracking error as the process is subjected to non-Gaussian disturbances. Meanwhile, since the precise statistical property of noises is hard to obtain for many industrial processes, the kernel density estimation (KDE) technique is employed in this paper to estimate the entropy. The convergence of RBF network is discussed and the stability of the resulted closed-loop hybrid control system is analyzed in mean square sense. Finally, a numerical example and a practical system testing are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.
