Kinetic pathways of ionic transport in fast-charging lithium titanate

Fast-charging batteries typically use electrodes capable of accommodating lithium continuously by means of solid-solution transformation because they have few kinetic barriers apart from ionic diffusion. One exception is lithium titanate (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ), an anode exhibiting extraordinary rate capability apparently inconsistent with its two-phase reaction and slow Li diffusion in both phases. Through real-time tracking of Li+ migration using operando electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we reveal that facile transport in Li 4+x Ti 5 O 12 is enabled by kinetic pathways comprising distorted Li polyhedra in metastable intermediates along two-phase boundaries. Our work demonstrates that high-rate capability may be enabled by accessing the energy landscape above the ground state, which may have fundamentally different kinetic mechanisms from the ground-state macroscopic phases. This insight should present new opportunities in searching for high-rate electrode materials.

Perspectives on Cobalt Supply through 2030 in the Face of Changing Demand

Lithium-ion battery demand, particularly for electric vehicles, is projected to increase by over 300% throughout the next decade. With these expected increases in demand, cobalt (Co)-dependent technologies face the risk of significant impact from supply concentration and mining limitations in the short term. In this study, increased extraction and secondary recovery form the basis of modeling scenarios that examine implications on Co supply to 2030. Demand for Co is estimated to range from 235 to 430 ktonnes in 2030. This upper bound on Co demand in 2030 corresponds to 280% of world refinery capacity in 2016. Supply from scheduled and unscheduled production as well as secondary production is estimated to range from 320 to 460 ktonnes. Our analysis suggests the following: (1) Co price will remain relatively stable in the short term, given that this range suggests even a supply surplus, (2) future Co supply will become more diversified geographically and mined more as a byproduct of nickel (Ni) over this period, and (3) for this demand to be met, attention should be paid to sustained investments in refined supply of Co and secondary recovery.

A High-Energy NASICON-Type Cathode Material for Na-Ion Batteries

Over the last decade, Na-ion batteries have been extensively studied as low-cost alternatives to Li-ion batteries for large-scale grid storage applications; however, the development of high-energy positive electrodes remains a major challenge. Materials with a polyanionic framework, such as Na superionic conductor (NASICON)-structured cathodes with formula Na x M 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , have attracted considerable attention because of their stable 3D crystal structure and high operating potential. Herein, a novel NASICON-type compound, Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 , is reported as a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries that deliver a high specific capacity of 130 mAh g –1 during discharge utilizing high-voltage Mn 2+/3+ (3.5 V), Mn 3+/4+ (4.0 V), and Cr 3+/4+ (4.35 V) transition metal redox. In addition, Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 exhibits a high rate capability (97 mAh g –1 at 5 C) and excellent all-temperature performance. In situ X-ray diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction analyses reveal reversible structural evolution for both charge and discharge.

Probing Mg Migration in Spinel Oxides

Mg batteries utilizing oxide cathodes can theoretically surpass the energy density of current Li-ion technologies. The absence of functional devices so far has been ascribed to impeded Mg 2+ migration within oxides, which severely handicaps intercalation reactions at the cathode. Broadly, knowledge of divalent cation migration in solid frameworks is surprisingly deficient. In this paper, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of Mg migration within three spinel oxides, which reveal critical features that influence it. Experimental activation energies for a Mg 2+ hop to an adjacent vacancy, as low as ~0.6 eV, are reported. These barriers are low enough to support functional electrodes based on the intercalation of M g2+ . Subsequent electrochemical experiments demonstrate that significant demagnesiation is indeed possible, but the challenges instead lie with the chemical stability of the oxidized states. Our findings enhance the understanding of cation transport in solid structures and renew the prospects of finding materials capable of high density of energy storage.
