Vibration suppression in large space structures

The problem of potential instability caused by actuator dynamics is examined. Two ways of overcoming it are discussed: rate feedback with compensation and position feedback with tuning filters.

Experimental measurements of hydrodynamic stiffness matrices for a centrifugal pump impeller

The objective of the Rotor Force Test Facility at the California Institute of Technology is to artificially orbit the center of rotation of an impeller enclosed within a volute over a range of frequencies from zero to synchronous and to measure the resulting forces on the impeller. Preliminary data from the first stage experiments in which the shaft is orbited at low frequency is reported. Steady volute forces along with stiffness matrices due to the change in position of the rotor center are measured. Static pressure taps around the volute are used to obtain volute pressure distributions for various fixed positions of the impeller center and for various flow rates. Static pressure forces are calculated from these pressure distributions allowing a more complete analysis of the components of the impeller forces. Comparison is made with various existing theoretical and experimental results.

Low-thrust perturbation guidance

Two perturbation guidance schemes, time-to-go guidance and minimum-distance guidance, are reexamined, in the context of a low-thrust orbit transfer problem. The two schemes, which use different techniques for indexing feedback gains, are shown to be comparable in performance. Both schemes are found to produce terminal state errors which are orders of magnitude smaller than those obtained in several previous studies. Various small modifications or enhancements of the algorithms are thought to account for a portion of the dramatic improvement in results. The problem investigated is a hypothetical earth to Mars orbit transfer, with six state variables, two control variables, and six terminal state constraints.

Structural dynamics analyses testing and correlation

Some aspects of the lack of close correlation between the predictions of analytical modeling of dynamic structures and the results of vibration tests on such structures are examined. Ways in which the correlation may be improved are suggested.

Attitude stability of spinning satellites

Some problems of attitude stability of spinning satellites are treated in a rigorous manner. With certain restrictions, linearized stability analysis correctly predicts the attitude stability of spinning satellites, even in the critical cases of the Liapunov-Poincare stability theory.

Nonlinear ordinary difference equations

Future space vehicles will be relatively large and flexible, and active control will be necessary to maintain geometrical configuration. While the stresses and strains in these space vehicles are not expected to be excessively large, their cumulative effects will cause significant geometrical nonlinearities to appear in the equations of motion, in addition to the nonlinearities caused by material properties. Since the only effective tool for the analysis of such large complex structures is the digital computer, it will be necessary to gain a better understanding of the nonlinear ordinary difference equations which result from the time discretization of the semidiscrete equations of motion for such structures.

Global analysis of a buck regulator

Sufficient conditions for global stability of a buck regulator using a discrete control law are found. The method of paired systems and Liapunov functions are used to establish global stability and to study the convergence of the regulator. A heuristic argument is given that the optimal switching curves associated with the paired continuous systems approximate the optimal switching curves of the discrete systems.

Matrix Perturbation Techniques in Structural Dynamics

Matrix perturbation are developed techniques which can be used in the dynamical analysis of structures where the range of numerical values in the matrices extreme or where the nature of the damping matrix requires that complex valued eigenvalues and eigenvectors be used. The techniques can be advantageously used in a variety of fields such as earthquake engineering, ocean engineering, aerospace engineering and other fields concerned with the dynamical analysis of large complex structures or systems of second order differential equations. A number of simple examples are included to illustrate the techniques.
