Solar cell radiation handbook

The handbook to predict the degradation of solar cell electrical performance in any given space radiation environment is presented. Solar cell theory, cell manufacturing and how they are modeled mathematically are described. The interaction of energetic charged particles radiation with solar cells is discussed and the concept of 1 MeV equivalent electron fluence is introduced. The space radiation environment is described and methods of calculating equivalent fluences for the space environment are developed. A computer program was written to perform the equivalent fluence calculations and a FORTRAN listing of the program is included. Data detailing the degradation of solar cell electrical parameters as a function of 1 MeV electron fluence are presented.

Solar cell radiation handbook

Solar cell theory cells are manufactured, and how they are modeled mathematically is reviewed. The interaction of energetic charged particle radiation with solar cells is discussed in detail and the concept of 1 MeV equivalent electron fluence is introduced. The space radiation environment is described and methods of calculating equivalent fluences for the space environment are developed. A computer program was written to perform the equivalent fluence calculations and a FORTRAN listing of the program is included. Finally, an extensive body of data detailing the degradation of solar cell electrical parameters as a function of 1 MeV electron fluence is presented.

Solar cell radiation handbook

A method is presented for predicting the degradation of a solar array in a space radiation environment. Solar cell technology which emphasizes the cell parameters that degrade in a radiation environment, is discussed along with the experimental techniques used in the evaluation of radiation effects. Other topics discussed include: theoretical aspects of radiation damage, methods for developing relative damage coefficients, nature of the space radiation environment, method of calculating equivalent fluence from electron and proton energy spectrums and relative damage coefficients, and comparison of flight data with estimated degradation.

Degradation and recovery mechanisms in lithium-doped solar cells

Several groups of lithium-doped solar cells have been evaluated under 1-MeV electron irradiation. Many of these groups indicated superior electrical output after irradiation and recovery as compared to similarly irradiated n/p solar cells. The superior cells are those with lithium concentrations of 2 to 5 x 10 to the 14th power atoms per cu cm at the junction. An irradiation of lithium-doped cells with 28-MeV electrons indicated a tenfold advantage of lithium-doped cells over n/p cells. Studies of the changes in the lithium concentration during recovery have shown the amounts of lithium reacting is highly nonlinear in regard to the electron fluence and varies greatly with distance from the junction. The results indicate that precipitation of lithium on radiation defects may be the cause of recovery rather than ion pairing.

Behavior of lithium in irradiated solar cells.

The current state of the art in radiation resistant lithium-doped silicon solar cells is reviewed. Fabrication techniques are reviewed. Characteristics of lithium-doped cells are discussed. Behavior of lithium-doped cells during 1 MeV electron irradiation are studied for various types of cells. Effects of variations in lithium and oxygen concentration are shown and discussed. Capacitance measurements at various voltages, frequencies and temperatures are used to detect charges in lithium donor concentration and the formation of defects during irradiation. Physical models to explain the observed effects are presented.
