Advanced Energy Topics for Hill District Community Leaders [Slides]

Through Communities LEAP, a community coalition focused on the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh is working with a technical assistance provider network led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The coalition includes community organizations, nonprofits, the city government, and the utility. Technical assistance provides analysis and information to support Hill District stakeholders in their goals to create informed residential energy efficiency and renewable energy transition strategies that improve housing conditions and lower energy bills, incorporate energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies into existing, community-driven development efforts, and generate quality local jobs. The Advanced Energy Topics resource is intended to support Hill District community leaders with strategic planning on energy-related topics. The topics included are intended to serve as a technical reference for community leaders to help inform decision-making around energy. The Advanced Energy Topics resource was informed by engagement through the Communities LEAP pilot program with three Hill District Registered Community Organizations: the Hill District Collaborative, the Hill District Consensus Group, and the Hill Community Development Corporation.

Considerations for Floating Wind Energy Development in the Gulf of Maine

This report summarizes the primary considerations for developing floating offshore wind energy in the Gulf of Maine based on the current knowledge of the staff at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as of June 2023. This work was performed as a supplement to information solicited by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in their Call for Information and Nominations announced in April 2023 (BOEM 2023b). The purpose of this report is to provide general information to the citizens of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and to inform decision makers and stakeholders about the unique challenges of developing floating offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine. This report intends to provide context to show the importance of the energy markets created by the states that floating offshore wind development in the Gulf of Maine will serve.

Additive Manufacturing Design Guidelines for Wind Industry

The purpose of this report is to equip wind industry professionals with the fundamental information needed to best leverage additive manufacturing techniques in their design and manufacturing decisions. Herein an overview of each of the seven families of additive manufacturing is provided, along with typical materials used in each process, current ranges on process speeds, materials and system costs, and examples of systems on the market today. Using the lens of large-scale additive to suit the needs of the wind industry, the processes that are well-suited to large-scale production are down selected from the seven families and additional information with design guidelines specific to each process are detailed. A companion document titled “Relevant Additive Manufacturing Materials for Wind Industry” elaborates on the specifics of relevant material properties and test methods for additive manufacturing materials.

Relevant Additive Manufacturing Materials for Wind Industry

The purpose of this report is to equip wind industry professionals with the relevant material testing and properties of large format extrusion-based additive manufacturing processes. Discussion on the printability and processing of different classes of materials (i.e. low temperature, high temperature, thermoplastics, elastomeric, foam, etc.) is provided as well as relevant test standards and methods. Existing results for materials and properties are detailed. A companion document titled “Additive Manufacturing Design Guidelines for Wind Industry” covers the seven families of additive manufacturing, the relevance of each family to the wind industry, and design guidelines and considerations for the most relevant processes.
