Calculation of stiffness and damping coefficients for elastically supported gas foil bearings

The stiffness and damping coefficients of an elastically supported gas foil bearing are calculated. A perfect gas is used as the lubricant, and its behavior is described by the Reynolds equation. The structural model consists only of an elastic foundation. The fluid equations and the structural equations are coupled. A perturbation method is used to obtain the linearized dynamic coefficient equations. A finite difference formulation has been developed to solve for the four stiffness and the four damping coefficients. The effect of the bearing compliance on the dynamic coefficients is discussed in this paper.

Life extending control for rocket engines

The concept of life extending control is defined. A brief discussion of current fatigue life prediction methods is given and the need for an alternative life prediction model based on a continuous functional relationship is established. Two approaches to life extending control are considered: (1) the implicit approach which uses cyclic fatigue life prediction as a basis for control design; and (2) the continuous life prediction approach which requires a continuous damage law. Progress on an initial formulation of a continuous (in time) fatigue model is presented. Finally, nonlinear programming is used to develop initial results for life extension for a simplified rocket engine (model).

Performance of journal bearings with semi-compressible fluids

Cryogenic fluids in isothermal rigid surface and foil type journal bearings can sometimes be treated as semicompressible fluids. In these applications, the fluid density is a function of the pressure. At low pressures, the fluids can change from a liquid to a saturated liquid-vapor phase. The performance of a rigid surface journal bearing with an idealized semicompressible fluid is discussed. Pressure solutions are based upon a Reynolds equation which includes the effects of a compressibility via the bulk modulus of the fluid. Results are contrasted with the performance of isothermal constant property incompressible fluids.

Theoretical performance of foil journal bearings

A modified forward iteration approach for the coupled solution of foil bearings is presented. The method is used to predict the steady state theoretical performance of a journal type gas bearing constructed from an inextensible shell supported by an elastic foundation. Bending effects are treated as negligible. Finite element methods are used to predict both the foil deflections and the pressure distribution in the gas film.

Statistics of close approaches between asteroids and planets - Project Spaceguard

A data base of close approaches to the major planets has been generated via numerical integrations for a large number of planet-crossing asteroid orbits over the course of 200,000 yr; these data are then applied to such statistical theories as those of Kessler (1981) and Wetherill (1967). Attention is given to the orbits of the Toro-class asteroids, which violate the assumption of a lack of mean motion resonance locking between target planet and asteroid. A modified form of the Kessler theory is proposed which can address the problem of approaches between orbits that are either nearly coplanar or nearly tangent. A correlation analysis is used to test the assumption that the orbital elements of a planet-crossing orbit change solely due to close approaches.

Dynamics of Pluto

The present study of the Pluto orbit yielded by the LONGSTOP 1B, 100-Myr numerical integration of the outer planets has given attention to the 3:2 resonance in mean motion with Neptune up to degree 2 in eccentricities and inclinations. Confirmations are obtained for both the 19,900-year period longitudinal libration and the 3.78-Myr period libration of the Pluto pericenter argument. Because chaos originates with small divisors, possible resonances have been searched for among the frequencies associated with the critical arguments. The macroscopic stability of the orbit of Pluto is explainable in terms of the association of high-order resonances with small chaotic regions.
