Liquidlike state of dense hydrogen

Some difficulties associated with estimates of the ground-state energy difference between liquid and solid metallic hydrogen based on many-body perturbation theory are pointed out. Arguments based on liquid-state perturbation theory which indicate that the energy difference may be much smaller than was found in a previous calculation are presented.

Ordered pairing in liquid metallic hydrogen

We study two possible types of pairing involving the protons of a proposed low-temperature liquid phase metallic hydrogen. Electron-proton pairing, which can result in an insulating phase, is investigated by using an approximate solution of an Eliashberg-type equation for the anomalous self-energy. A very low estimate of the transition temperature is obtained by including proton correlations in the effective interaction. For proton-proton pairing, we derive a new proton pair potential based on the Abrikosov wave function. This potential includes the electron-proton interaction to all orders and has a much larger well depth than is obtained with linear screening methods. This suggests the possibility of either a superfluid paired phase analogous to that in He-3, or alternatively a phase with true molecular pairing.

Approaches for reducing the insulator-metal transition pressure in hydrogen

Two possible techniques for reducing the external pressure required to induce the insulator-metal transition in solid hydrogen are described. One uses impurities to lower the energy of the metallic phase relative to that of the insulating phase. The other utilizes a negative pressure induced in the insulating phase by electron-hole pairs, created either with laser irradiation or pulsed synchrotron sources.

Band-overlap metallization of BaS, BaSe and BaTe

The insulator-metal transition volumes for BaS, BaSe, and BaTe are calculated for the first time, using the self-consistent augmented spherical wave technique. The metallized transition volumes are smaller than those corresponding to the NaCl yields CsCl structural transitions, but, 10 to 15% larger than those obtained by the Herzfeld dielectric theory. The calculated equilibrium energy gaps in the NaCl structure underestimate the measured ones by 50 to 60%.

Asymptotic freedom in solids - A theorem

A cusp theorem is proved that relates the zero-separation value and slope of two-particle position correlation functions in quantum many-body systems with Coulombic interactions. The theorem is independent of the particle type and symmetry of the wave function. Its proof uses only the integral form of the Schroedinger equation and the continuity and exponential decay of the wave function. It is used to derive a sum rule for the electron-gas structure factor and an exact statement about the screening of point charges. Applications to atomic-orbital-based calculations for H2 and metallic H are described.
