Performance of differenced range data types in Voyager navigation

Voyager radio navigation made use of a differenced rage data type for both Saturn encounters because of the low declination singularity of Doppler data. Nearly simultaneous two-way range from two-station baselines was explicitly differenced to produce this data type. Concurrently, a differential VLBI data type (DDOR), utilizing doubly differenced quasar-spacecraft delays, with potentially higher precision was demonstrated. Performance of these data types is investigated on the Jupiter-to-Saturn leg of Voyager 2. The statistics of performance are presented in terms of actual data noise comparisons and sample orbit estimates. Use of DDOR as a primary data type for navigation to Uranus is discussed.

Satellite ephemerides for Voyager Saturn encounter

Satellite ephemerides played an important role in the navigation of the Voyager 1 and 2 Saturn encounters. They were used in the models of the gravitational forces acting on the spacecraft and of the onboard optical navigation measurements. They also were used in predicting the pointing directions of the onboard instruments for satellite scientific observations. This paper describes the form of the Voyager Saturn satellite ephemerides and gives the values of the parameters used in the ephemeris generation. The update of those parameters as part of the optical navigation process is also discussed, and the best Voyager ephemerides are presented and compared to those based on earlier Saturn satellite theories.

Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 Saturn encounter orbit determination

This paper contains quantitative results and conclusions from the Saturn approach orbit determination for Voyagers 1 and 2. The major topics covered include an overview of the navigation-related requirements and a review of the salient orbit determination results obtained. Special attention is paid to the use of combined spacecraft-based optical observations and earth-based radiometric observations to achieve accurate orbit determination during the Saturn encounter approach phase.

Interplanetary orbit determination

A general description of the Viking interplanetary orbit determination activity extending from launch to Mars encounter is given. The emphasis is on the technical fundamentals of the problem, basic strategies and data types used, quantitative results, and specific conclusions derived from the inflight experience. Special attention is given to the use of the spacecraft-based optical measurements and their first application as a principal navigational data type for an interplanetary mission. The optical-based orbit determination, in fact, was the primary contributor to the exceptional interplanetary navigation accuracy experienced by both Viking missions. The Viking application of optical orbit determination relied in large part on the technology developed and demonstrated by the Mariner 9 Optical Navigation Demonstration.

The determination of the interplanetary orbits of Vikings 1 and 2

A description is presented of the navigation-related events of the Viking Mars mission. Orbit determination system fundamentals are discussed, taking into account the trajectory models, observation models, radio data models, range considerations, optical data models, filter models, the orbit determination process, critical orbit determination inputs, and orbit determination errors. Attention is also given to questions of orbit determination strategy, orbit determination results, optical measurements processing, aspects of approach orbit determination evaluation, and the orbit determination software system.

'Diving reflex' in man - Its relation to isometric and dynamic exercise.

To test the influence of physical activity on the diving reflex, 10 normal men held their breath with their faces immersed in 15 C water during rest, bicycle exercise, and sustained isometric handgrip contraction. At all conditions, a slight but statistically significant elevation of blood pressure and a marked decrease in heart rate occurred during each dive. During moderate bicycle exercise heart rate fell more rapidly than at rest and the final level of bradycardia approached that achieved at rest, despite the fact that predive heart rates were much higher during exercise. When diving occurred in combination with isometric exercise, bradycardia was less severe than during resting dives and final heart rates could be represented as the sum of the expected responses to each intervention alone. In all conditions apnea without face immersion caused bradycardia that was less severe than during wet dives.
