A Jupyter Notebook Environment For Multibody Dynamics

DARTS is a rigid/flexible multibody dynamics toolkit for themodeling and simulation of aerospace and robotic vehicles forengineering applications. In this paper we describe an on-line,browser-based environment using Jupyter notebooks to supporttraining needs for the DARTS software. The suite of curated tutorial notebooks is organized into different topic areas, and intomultiple themes within each topic area. The notebooks within atheme use a progression of examples for users to expand theirunderstanding of the software. The topic areas include one onthe DARTS multibody dynamics software and another one on thetheory underlying the multibody dynamics formulation. We alsodescribe a number of Jupyter extensions that were used - andsome developed in house - to enhance the notebook interface foruse with the dynamics simulation software. One significant extension we implemented allows the embedding of live 3D visualizations within simulation notebooks.

DSENDS: multi-mission flight dynamics simulator for NASA missions

Increasingly complex space missions require powerful and flexible simulation environments in order to design, analyze, and operate the missions. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has created the DSENDS simulation environment that addresses these needs for a wide range of space missions. In this paper, we describe the DSENDS simulation environment and the key architectural components that make DSENDS a useful simulation and analysis framework. We also overview a variety of NASA missions and flight experiments that are using DSENDS.

Modeling and Simulation of Vehicle Dynamics on the Surface of Phobos

In this paper we analyze the dynamics of a spacecraft in proximity of Phobos by developing the equations of motion of a test mass in the Phobos rotating frame using a model based on circularly-restricted three body problem, and by analyzing the dynamics of a ATHLETE hopper vehicle interacting with the soil under different soil-interaction conditions. The main conclusion of the numerical studies is that the system response is dominated by the stiffness and damping parameters of the leg springs, with the soil characteristics having a much smaller effect. The system simulations identify ranges of parameters for which the vehicle emerges stably (relying only on the passive viscoelastic damper at each leg) or unstably (needing active attitude control) from the hop. The implication is that further experimental and possibly computational modeling work, as well as site characterization (from precursor missions) will be necessary to obtain validated performance models.

Real-Time and High-Fidelity Simulation Environment for Autonomous Ground Vehicle Dynamics

This paper reports on a collaborative project between U.S. Army TARDEC and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to develop a unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) simulation model using the ROAMS vehicle modeling framework. Besides modeling the physical suspension of the vehicle, the sensing and navigation of the HMMWV vehicle are simulated. Using models of urban and off-road environments, the HMMWV simulation was tested in several ways, including navigation in an urban environment with obstacle avoidance and the performance of a lane change maneuver.

Large Terrain Modeling and Visualization for Planets

Physics-based simulations are actively used in the design, testing, and operations phases of surface and near-surface planetary space missions. One of the challenges in realtime simulations is the ability to handle large multi-resolution terrain data sets within models as well as for visualization. In this paper, we describe special techniques that we have developed for visualization, paging, and data storage for dealing with these large data sets. The visualization technique uses a real-time GPU-based continuous level-of-detail technique that delivers multiple frames a second performance even for planetary scale terrain model sizes.

SimScape Terrain Modeling Toolkit

This paper describes the SIMSCAPE middleware toolkit that has been developed recently to provide a common infrastructure for importing terrain model data from multiple data sources and making them available to simulation applications. The SIMSCAPE infrastructure simplifies the overall simulation design by eliminating the traditional need for custom terrain model interfaces to terrain data sources and simulation users. SIMSCAPE provides a collection of libraries and tools to use and manage terrain environment models within a wide range of simulation applications.

Venus Aerobot Multisonde Mission

Robotic exploration of Venus presents many challenges because of the thick atmosphere and the high surface temperatures. The Venus Aerobot Multisonde mission concept addresses these challenges by using a robotic balloon or aerobot to deploy a number of short lifetime probes or sondes to acquire images of the surface. A Venus aerobot is not only a good platform for precision deployment of sondes but is very effective at recovering high rate data. This paper describes the Venus Aerobot Multisonde concept and discusses a proposal to NASA's Discovery program using the concept for a Venus Exploration of Volcanoes and Atmosphere (VEVA). The status of the balloon deployment and inflation, balloon envelope, communications, thermal control and sonde deployment technologies are also reviewed.
