β -delayed neutron emissions from N > 50 gallium isotopes

β-delayed γ-neutron spectroscopy has been performed on the decay of A = 84 to 87 gallium isotopes at the RI-beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center using a high-efficiency array of 3 He neutron counters (BRIKEN). β-2n-γ events were measured in the decays of all of the four isotopes for the first time, which is direct evidence for populating the excited states of two-neutron daughter nuclei. Detailed decay schemes with the γ branching ratios were obtained for these isotopes, and the neutron emission probabilities (P xn ) were updated from the previous study. Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations were performed to understand the experimental branching ratios. We found that the P 1n and P 2n values are sensitive to the nuclear level densities of 1n daughter nuclei and showed that the statistical model reproduced the P 2n /P 1n ratio better when experimental levels plus shell-model level densities fit by the Gilbert-Cameron formula were used as the level-density input. We also showed the neutron and γ branching ratios are sensitive to the ground-state spin of the parent nucleus. Our statistical model analysis suggested J ≤ 3 for the unknown ground-state spin of the odd-odd nucleus 86 Ga, from the I γ (4 + → 2 + )/I γ (2 + → 0 + ) ratio of 84 Ga and the P 2n /P 1n ratio. In conclusion, these results show the necessity of detailed understanding of the decay scheme, including data from neutron spectroscopy, in addition to γ measurements of the multineutron emitters.

First observation of isomeric states in 111 Zr, 113 Nb, and 115 Mo

Isomeric states in the neutron-rich nuclei 111 Zr [T 1/2 =0.10 (7) μs] , 113 Nb [T 1/2 =0.7 (4) μs], 115 Mo [T 1/2 =46 (3) μs] were first identified at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) of RIKEN by using in-flight fission and fragmentation of a 238 U beam at an energy of 345 MeV/u. Here is a brief report of the γ transitions de-exciting from isomeric states and half-lives measurements, which provides the first spectroscopy in the nuclear region of prolate-to-oblate shape-phase transition around mass A ≈110.

β-Delayed One and Two Neutron Emission Probabilities Southeast of 132 Sn and the Odd-Even Systematics in r-Process Nuclide Abundances

Here, the β-delayed one- and two-neutron emission probabilities (P 1n and P 2n ) of 20 neutron-rich nuclei with N≥82 have been measured at the RIBF facility of the RIKEN Nishina Center. P 1n of 130,131 Ag, 133,134 Cd, 135,136 In, and 138,139 Sn were determined for the first time, and stringent upper limits were placed on P2n for nearly all cases. β-delayed two-neutron emission (β2n) was unambiguously identified in 133 Cd and 135,136 In, and their P 2n were measured. Weak β2n was also detected from 137,138 Sn. Our results highlight the effect of the N=82 and Z=50 shell closures on β-delayed neutron emission probability and provide stringent benchmarks for newly developed macroscopic-microscopic and self-consistent global models with the inclusion of a statistical treatment of neutron and γ emission. The impact of our measurements on r-process nucleosynthesis was studied in a neutron star merger scenario. Our P 1n and P 2n have a direct impact on the odd-even staggering of the final abundance, improving the agreement between calculated and observed Solar System abundances. The odd isotope fraction of Ba in r-process-enhanced (r-II) stars is also better reproduced using our new data.

Measuring the β-decay Properties of Neutron-rich Exotic Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd Isotopes to Constrain the Nucleosynthesis Yields in the Rare-earth Region

Abstract The β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities of 28 exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd were measured for the first time at RIKEN Nishina Center using the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) and the BRIKEN neutron detector array. The existing β -decay half-life ( T 1/2 ) database was significantly increased toward more neutron-rich isotopes, and uncertainties for previously measured values were decreased. The new data not only constrain the theoretical predictions of half-lives and β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities, but also allow for probing the mechanisms of formation of the high-mass wing of the rare-earth peak located at A ≈ 160 in the r -process abundance distribution through astrophysical reaction network calculations. An uncertainty quantification of the calculated abundance patterns with the new data shows a reduction of the uncertainty in the rare-earth peak region. The newly introduced variance-based sensitivity analysis method offers valuable insight into the influence of important nuclear physics inputs on the calculated abundance patterns. The analysis has identified the half-lives of 168 Sm and of several gadolinium isotopes as some of the key variables among the current experimental data to understand the remaining abundance uncertainty at A = 167–172.

Single neutron transfer on 23 Ne and its relevance for the pathway of nucleosynthesis in astrophysical X-ray bursts

We present new experimental measurements of resonance strengths in the astrophysical 23 Al($p, γ$) 24 Si reaction, constraining the pathway of nucleosynthesis beyond 22 Mg in X-ray burster scenarios. Specifically, we have performed the first measurement of the ($d, p$) reaction using a radioactive beam of 23 Ne to explore levels in 24 Ne, the mirror analog of 24 Si. Four strong single-particle states were observed and corresponding neutron spectroscopic factors were extracted with a precision of ~20%. Using these spectroscopic factors, together with mirror state identifications, we have reduced uncertainties in the strength of the key ℓ = 0 resonance at $E_r$ = 157 keV, in the astrophysical 23 Al($p, γ$) reaction, by a factor of 4. Our results show that the 22 Mg($p, γ$) 23 Al($p, γ$) pathway dominates over the competing 22 Mg($α, γ$) reaction in all but the most energetic X-ray burster events (T > 0.85 GK), significantly affecting energy production and the preservation of hydrogen fuel.

Coulomb excitation of the | T z | = 1 2 , A = 23 mirror pair

Background: Electric-quadrupole ( E 2 ) strengths relate to the underlying quadrupole deformation of a nucleus and present a challenge for many nuclear theories. Additionally, mirror nuclei in the vicinity of the line of N = Z represent a convenient laboratory for testing deficiencies in such models, making use of the isospin symmetry of the systems. Purpose: Uncertainties associated with literature E 2 strengths in Mg 23 are some of the largest in T z = | 1 2 | nuclei in the s d shell. The purpose of the present paper is to improve the precision with which these values are known, to enable better comparison with theoretical models. Methods: Coulomb-excitation measurements of Mg 23 and Na 23 were performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using the TIGRESS spectrometer. They were used to determine the E 2 matrix elements of mixed E 2 / M 1 transitions. Results: Reduced E 2 transition strengths, B ( E 2 ) , were extracted for Mg 23 and Na 23 . Their precision was improved by factors of approximately 6 for both isotopes, while agreeing within uncertainties with previous measurements. Conclusions: A comparison was made with both shell-model and ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations. Valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations were found to underpredict the absolute E 2 strength, in agreement with previous studies.

Coulomb excitation of 80,82 Kr and a change in structure approaching N = Z = 40

Nuclei approaching N = Z = 40 are known to exhibit strongly deformed structures and are thought to be candidates for shape coexistence. In the krypton isotopes, 80,82 Kr are poorly characterized, preventing an understanding of evolving deformation approaching N = 40. The present work aims to determine electric quadrupole transition strengths and quadrupole moments of 80,82 Kr in order to better characterize their deformation. Sub-barrier Coulomb excitation was employed, impinging the isotopes of krypton on 196 Pt and 208 Pb targets. Utilizing a semiclassical description of the safe Coulomb-excitation process E 2 matrix elements could then be determined. Eleven new or improved matrix elements are determined in 80 Kr and seven in 82 Kr . The new B(E2;0$^+_1$ → 2$^+_1$ ) value in 82 Kr disagrees with the evaluated value by 3σ , which can be explained in terms of deficiencies in a previous Coulomb-excitation analysis. Conclusions: Comparison of measured Q s ( 2$^+_1$ ) and B(E2; 0$^+_1$ → 2$^+_1$ ) values indicates that neutron-deficient ( N ≤ 42 ) isotopes of krypton are closer to axial deformation than other isotopic chains in the mass region. A continuation of this trend to higher Z may result in Sr and Zr isotopes exhibiting near-axial prolate deformation.

Strong one-neutron emission from two-neutron unbound states in β decays of the r -process nuclei Ga 86 , 87

β-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron branching ratios (P$_{1n}$ and P$_{2n}$) have been measured in the decay of A = 84 to 87 Ga isotopes at the Radioactive-Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) at the RIKEN Nishina Center using a high-efficiency array of 3 He neutron counters (BRIKEN). Two-neutron emission was observed in the decay of 84, 85, 87 Ga for the first time and the branching ratios were measured to be P$_{2n}$ = 1.6 (2)%, 1.3 (2)%, and 10.2 ( 28 ) stat ( 5 ) sys %, respectively. One-neutron branching ratio of 87 Ga (P$_{1n}$= 81 (9) stat (8) sys %) and half-life of 29(4) ms were measured for the first time. The branching ratios of 86 Ga were also measured to be P$_{1n}$ = 74 (2) stat (8) sys % and 16.2 (9) stat ( 6 ) sys % with better precision than a previous study. The observation that P$_{1n}$ > P$_{2n}$ for both 86,87 Ga was unexpected and is interpreted as a signature of dominating one-neutron emission from the two-neutron unbound excited states in 86, 87 Ge. In order to interpret the experimental results, shell-model and Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations of delayed particle and γ-ray emission probabilities were performed. This model framework reproduces the experimental results. The shell model alone predicts P$_{2n}$ significantly larger than P$_{1n}$ for the 87 Ga decay, and it is necessary to invoke a statistical description to successfully explain the observation that P$_{1n}$ > P$_{2n}$. Our new results demonstrate the relevance and importance of a statistical description of neutron emission for the prediction of the decay properties of multineutron emitters and that it must be included in the r -process modeling.

Nuclear Data Sheets for A=218

The evaluated data are presented for 11 known A=218 nulcides (Pb, Bi, Po, At, Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac, Th, Pa and U). For {sup 218}Pb, {sup 218}Bi, {sup 218}At and {sup 218}Pa, data are available only for the ground states. For {sup 218}U, only the g.s. and a high-spin isomer are known, with no data on γ-ray transitions available. For {sup 218}Po, ten excited states are known from {sup 218}Bi decay, with no knowledge on the multipolarities of gamma-ray transitions. For {sup 218}Th, five excited states in the g.s. band are known from an in-beam γ-ray study. Data on level half-lives, multipolarities and mixing ratios of gamma transitions is generally lacking for A=218 nuclei. The static magnetic dipole moment has been measured for only an isomer in {sup 218}Fr. With the exception of a new nuclide, {sup 218}Pb, and measurements of half-lives of ground states of a few nuclides of A=218 and A=222, no substantial structure information has become available since the previous evaluation in 2006. Q values are adopted from 2017Wa10 (AME-2016). The present evaluation supersedes the previous A=218 ENSDF evaluations, 2006Ja03, 1995El08, 1987El12 and 1977To13. This evaluation was carried out as part of a joint IAEA-ICTP workshop for Nuclear Structure and Decay Data, organized and hosted by the IAEA, Vienna, and ICTP, Trieste, October 15–26, 2018.
